5 Sequels That Released Over a Decade after Their Prequels

Every box office hit is followed by a sequel. Now filmmakers realize the benefits of making franchises instead of independent films – they work well, gain a fan following, and there’s always more buzz surrounding the sequel. Hollywood movies have been doing this for years and Bollywood is following suit. While most franchises release sequels every couple of years, some filmmakers take long breaks between their movies. For example, Finding Dory released 13 years after its prequel Finding Nemo. Meanwhile, some other sequels like Scarlett (sequel to Gone with the Wind) released after a gap of 54 years! Here are some Bollywood movies that released over a decade after their prequels:

Jaana Pehchana
Back in 1978, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se by Rajshri Productions – starring Sachin Pilgaonkar and Ranjeeta Kaur – became highly popular, especially for its catchy tunes. 33 years later, Rajshri decided to introduce the sequel titled Jaana Pehchana. The film continued where its prequel concluded and starred both the lead actors from the previous movies. Relive the album of the film here:

Ghayal Once Again
Sunny Deol’s
famous 1990 action drama, Ghayal, returned with a sequel last year. Deol reprised his role of Angry Young Man Ajay Mehra and even directed the film. Sunny Deol has also expressed his interest to make the third part of this franchise, called Ghayal: Trinity. There will be no more long gaps and the film is slated to release early next year.

Jai Gangaajal
The Prakash Jha-directed Gangaajal was highly popular when it released in 2003. The movie starred Ajay Devgn in the titular character, Gracy Singh, and Mukesh Tiwari. Its sequel, which released last year, saw Priyanka Chopra in the lead role with Jha appearing as a supporting character. Like its predecessor, this film too was a hit.

Aashiqui 2
Mahesh Bhatt
’s 1990 musical romance got a sequel with a completely new theme in 2013. While the Mohit Suri-directed film made Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor famous and also featured some brilliant songs, it did not have the magic of its prequel. However, it was a major commercial success at the box-office.

Judwaa 2
David Dhawan
’s 1997 cult comedy was a rage at the time. Even today, fans remember Salman Khan for his double role in the movie and the songs are still enjoyed 20 years later. By the end of the month, the sequel to Judwaa is set to release, starring Varun Dhawan in the lead roles. It remains to see whether Varun can recreate the
judwaa magic on screen with Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez.
