Over the years, some names have become synonymous with the Oscars. Whether or not they’ve won an Academy Award, some contributions to Hollywood are hard to ignore. However, even industry legends have had their fair share of snubs. Here are five Hollywood legends who have never taken home an Oscar:
In recent years, Leonardo DiCaprio has become the poster child for being snubbed by the Academy. It’s hard to believe that in his career, which has spanned over two decades, this Hollywood darling has never won an Oscar. But with five Best Actor nominations under his belt, one has to wonder when DiCaprio will finally win. His work on films like “Blood Diamond”, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” and “The Aviator” has garnered universal acclaim, prompting critics to question the Academy’s choices.
However, DiCaprio is nominated for his work on “The Wolf of Wall Street”, so 2014 could just be his year.
Alfred Hitchcock was one of the most influential filmmakers of all time. In fact, his influence has even been seen in more recent films like Se7enSide Effects and Shutter Island. With his catalog, it hardly seems fair that Hitchcock never took home the golden statue. However, he did score six nominations for his work on films like "Psycho", "Rear Window", "Spellbound" and "Lifeboat", among others. Both critics and viewers believed that Hitchcock deserved more than just a nomination for his work, especially on "Psycho" and "Rear Window".
Hitchcock was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award or an "honorary oscar" in 1967.
Sigourney Weaver has often – and rightfully – been called one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that she has three Oscar nominations to her name. In fact, she received two of those nominations in the same year, for her performances in “Working Girl” and “Gorillas in the Mist”. It’s also no surprise that it was the same year she bagged two Golden Globes. However, what is shocking is the fact that Weaver has never won an Academy Award. For what it’s worth, both her fans and critics agree that she deserved an Oscar for “Working Girl”.
Stanley Kubrick is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers. Kubrick’s influence has been seen in the works of directors like Terrence MalickDavid Fincher and Darren Aronofsky. In fact, Christopher Nolan has even cited Kubrick as a major influence. Though Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” did win the Oscar for special visual effects, he never won an Academy Award for his directorial work. It is widely believed that Kubrick should have taken home the award for his work on films like “Dr. Strangelove” and “A Clockwork Orange”.
5. Peter O’Toole:
Peter O’Toole has been a part of the film industry for over four decades. He has delivered critically-acclaimed performances in films like “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Becket” and “The Stunt Man”. In fact, his performances have been so good that they earned him eight Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. However, for all his nominations, O’Toole never took home the golden statue. In fact, he is the most-nominated actor to never have won the award.
There was some justice, though. In 2002, Peter O’Toole was given an Academy Honorary Award for his contribution to cinema.
