You’ve must heard of movies getting a sequel because of the insane amount of popularity that the lead character, the story, the original movie received. Sometimes it’s warranted as the fan frenzy refused to die (read Wolverine) but sometimes it’s better off without one. But what about the side cast? The sidekick to your hero, the helper.
Have you ever rooted for this sidekick who did more justice to his role than the main protagonist himself? Have you ever come out of the theater going ga-ga over how that supporting character was awesome and indulged yourself in mindless discussions? If you are nodding as you are reading this, we are on your side. Some supporting characters often tend to make a deeper impression on the audience and we often wish they would get their own standalone film. Here are our top five picks.
DeadshotIntroduced in the latest DC offering – Suicide Squad. Deadshot played by Will Smith was loved by all. He was funny, witty and driven, which was everything we needed him to be. A stand-alone movie with Deadshot and Batman would be nerdgasmic.
Harley QuinnAnother character we all loved was Harley Quinn a.k.a Harleen Quinzel. The whimsical DC character was played by the gorgeous Margot Robbie. She was the highlight of the film as fans flocked the theaters to get a glimpse of her. A standalone movie starring Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman is in the works and is rumored to be named as Gotham City Sirens. Keep your fingers crossed.
Darth MaulMaul’s survival after The Phantom Menace has already been chronicled in the Clone Wars TV series. But you know what’s missing? A Darth Maul standalone movie that gives an in-depth exploration of his training as Darth Sidious’ first apprentice. It’s highly unlikely that we will get a proper rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi but we’ll take our chances. Make it happen, Disney!
SlothsZootopia managed to charm moviegoers with myriads of characters, carefully detailing each and every one of them. The Sloths stood out though. Their idiosyncratic way of doing everything slowly had everyone laughing. Not to mention the subtle messages passed about bureaucracy just like many others through the movie. They are the new Penguins from Madagascar and this is one spin-off we cannot wait for.
Demon NunRemember the demon nun from The Conjuring 2? Well, we hope we get an in-depth explanation and a bit of history lesson in a spin-off movie.
