5 ‘Small’ Bollywood Films That Made A Big Splash This Year

The last hyped Hindi film of 2016 – Dangal – will be out this Friday, and it is expected to take the box-office by storm. The Aamir Khanstarrer will most likely join Sultan, Airlift, Fan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Shivaay to become one of the top grossers of the year. All of these films had great production values and featured top actors. But like every year, some small films came out of nowhere and managed to win hearts. Here are the top 5 niche Bollywood movies of 2016 that you have to watch before the year ends.

Besides Amitabh Bachchan, none of the actors in Pink were that popular. The movie did well purely because of positive word-of-mouth and critic reviews. Tackling a sensitive issue, Pink managed to put out the message that when a woman says 'No', it means 'No'.

Nil Battey Sannata

Education is important and no film explains it better than Nil Battey Sannata. Apart from addressing the issue, the movie also showcased the lovely bond between a mother and her daughter. Swara Bhaskar, who played the mother, has already won an award for her riveting performance.

Starring Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao, Aligarh premiered at the 20th Busan International Film Festival in 2015. Directed by Hansal Mehta, this February release, won praise from the critics but didn't earn much at the box-office, sadly. But it needed to be watched, and it is not too late to watch it this year. Go, get it now!

Nagesh Kukunoor is known to make critically-acclaimed films and Dhanak can easily be considered as one of his best works. The film follows the journey of two kids who leave their home to meet Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, on a poignant mission.

After two average films, Shabd and Teen Patti, Leena Yadav came out with Parched. There was a lot of talk about it as Radhika Apte’s nude scene from the movie was leaked online. Parched is a bold film that boasts of brilliant performances from its entire cast.
