While some of them have been positive and helped create awareness about several issues, there have also been several negative trends that became a rage and saw people people from all over the world participate in them. From unrealistic challenges to making something ordinary appear as negative, some of these trends were truly peculiar and weird.
We have listed down some of the most bizarre social media trends that popped up on social timelines. Trends, which made no sense whatsoever and made you wonder, "what the hell were they thinking".
The Belly Button Challenge
The Belly Button Challenge started as a trend in China and slowly took over the internet. This challenge required people to take an image of themselves while they tried to touch their belly button with their arm by reaching behind their back. Not only was this trend extremely dumb but glorified unrealistic body standards.
The Thigh Gap
The Thigh Gap was another bizarre and body shaming trend that became a rage over social media and was solely based on the gap between one’s thighs as a sign of acceptable body image. Believe it or not, there are actually videos with exercises to help attain the thigh gap.
A4 Waist Challenge
Another alarming trend that made us roll our eyes in exasperation was the A4 Waist Challenge. This trend too originated in China with women posing before a mirror with an A4 size sheet of paper. If the sheet of paper managed to cover their waist, they won; a trend that received much backlash and outrage.
Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge
Kylie Jenner and her lips are always a hot topic and we saw a rise in the number of people who viewed her lips as ‘goals’, which in turn gave rise to the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge. The challenge saw women resorting to various unsafe methods like sucking the air out of a cup to get fuller lips and posting pictures on social media.
The Don’t Judge Challenge
Last year, the Don’t Judge Challenge began trending on Instagram, Vine, Facebook and Twitter and saw people posting videos of themselves with fake scars and acne only to erase them to reveal their ‘actual face’. This trend considered having acne, scars and unibrows as something that made a person unattractive.
