The trend of actors also donning the producer's hat is not new and is growing fast. Sometimes a movie script may have the potential but may not find a producer this is when some actors take up the additional responsibility since they believe in the project. There are also times when actors produce a movie in order to provide opportunities for the younger breed of directors and actors. Bollywood has top actors like John Abraham, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn who have turned into savvy producers. South Indian film industry too have superstars who have continued with this trend and it looks like this trend is likely to stay.
August Cinema, the banner founded by Prithviraj is co-founded by well-known cinematographer Santhosh Sivan, Shaji Nadeshan, and Tamil actor Arya. August Cinema has produced the movies Urumi (2011), Double Barrel (2015), Indian Rupee (2011), Sapthamasree Thaskaraha (2015), Darvinte Parinamam (2016). August Cinema is also producing the upcoming Malayalam movie The Great Father, which stars Mammootty and Arya. The production company has also distributed movies like Molly Aunty Rocks (2012), Bangalore Days (2014) and Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014).
Dhanush launched his production company called Wunderbar Films in 2010 and he has since produced the Oscar-nominated Visaaranai(2015), Amma Kanakku (2016) and few others. Apart from these, Wunderbar Films has also produced the upcoming venture Velai Illa Pattadhaari 2 and Dhanush's directorial debut Power Paandi.
Mollywood actor Dileep founded the production company called Graand Productions and the first movie under the banner was the Dileep-starrer comedy hit CID Moosa (2003). Graand Production has also produced the movies The Metro (2011) and Malarvadi Arts Club (2010), the latter launched the careers of the now-well-established artists Nivin Pauly and Vineeth Sreenivasan. Its latest production venture is the comedy movie Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan.
Jayasurya's maiden production venture under the banner Dreams N Beyond was the hit Malayalam movie Punyalan Agarbattis (2013), followed by the movie Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam (2015) and the recently released horror comedy Pretham (2016), also directed by Ranjith Sankar who also owns the banner.
