Popular for his romance-dramas, Imtiaz Ali has been in the industry for more than two decades. He debuted with Socha Na Tha starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia, which didn't do well at the box office. His critical and commercial success was marked by his directorial venture Jab We Met starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. And since then there has been no looking back. He is known for his different take towards cinema. Even though he writes stories that are modern and relatable to the current generation, there are certain Imtiaz Ali signatures in his movies.
Jab Harry Met Sejal, his seventh directorial venture, releases this week. It is expected to have a bigger box office opening than any Imtiaz Ali movie. Here's what we have come to expect from any Imtiaz Ali movie:
Different take on a love story
While Bollywood is known for its kind of romance, Imtiaz's love stories do not follow the same path. They are more relatable to the current generation. If you didn't get the point then Love Aaj Kal started with a break-up party and Rockstar has this amazing pursuit to life, which actually was love in the form of music.
Hopping back and forth in time
The stories written by Imtiaz Ali have a background to it. In his movies, the story always moves back and forth in time to get the story right. While for some it is confusing to catch up with the story before the second half, some find that kind of editing pattern interesting.
A not-so-normal character
His movies always have a character that has a different take towards life. While many think that it is a reflection of Imtiaz's own personality, we can think of them as mere characters. Right from Geet in Jab We Met to Ved in Tamasha, you can find characters whose take on life is not run-of-the-mill.
Imtiaz Ali has explored many undiscovered (by Bollywood directors) locations abroad, in his movies. But in India, he has covered mostly North. If anyone looks carefully, his movies (shot in India) are usually shot in the northern part of India, especially Delhi. Take any of the movies, Tamasha, Love Aaj Kal, Jab We Met, Highway, Rockstar, etc. There is always a must-have scene at some location in Delhi.
It seems that Ranbir Kapoor is Imtiaz's favorite. And why not? After his performance in Rockstar, he has earned the love. Plus they are also very good friends in real life. Ranbir Kapoor was also the lead in Tamasha, in which he pulled off another multilayered character called Ved.
Although Jab Harry Met Sejal looks a bit different, the trailer makes sure it has at least half of the above-mentioned things. We are looking forward to this one and hope that the predictions are right.
