5 Things that Grabbed Headlines at the Nadigar Sangam Elections

Following Tamil news shows and staying clued in on the latest developments thanks to social media were the only things people were busy doing on Sunday, 19th October. Clearly, not the ideal way to spend a holiday, right? But, big controversies always make big headlines, which eventually grab people’s attention. If you’re wondering what we’re talking about, then it’s about the recently concluded Nadigar Sangam elections.

For the uninitiated, the Nadigar Sangam (Actors’ association) was formed in 1952 by the then, popular actors of the Tamil film industry – M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, M. R. Radha, S. S. Rajendran among others.

Elections in the association are held once every three years to elect the president. The general secretary and treasurer are other key posts in this group.

R. Sarathkumar, who had been elected unopposed three times since 2006 when former president Vijayakanth stepped down was defeated after the elections on 18 October 2015, by actor Nassar who belongs to the group Pandavar Ani.  While Vishal has been voted the general secretary, Karthi is the treasurer. We tell you 5 things that happened on the election day.

1. When Varalakshmi Sarthkumar had to choose between her father and her alleged beau:

"My friendship with Vishal has not been ruined because of the Nadigar Sangam elections. But my vote is for my father. Whoever wins the election must make sure they keep their promises.

2. When superstars supported:

Veterans Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan held contradicting views about their support for the team. While the former was reported to vouch for Sarthkumar’s team, Kamal Haasan supported his friend Nassar.

3. During the name clash

Kamal Haasan was quite vocal about his thoughts. He wished that the Nadigar Sangam be renamed to Indian Artistes Association. And that actors of all industries could become members. Rajinikanth requested members to change it to ‘Tamil Nadu Nadigargal Sangam’.

 4. When Wit Won

The King Of Comedy, Goundamani, also seemed to be his witty best at the venue. When quizzed about the name change for the association he said, "Nadigar Sangam nu irundha podhum" (Just Nadigar Sangam is enough).

5. The blame game

Vishal was allegedly attacked by a group of goons, whom the opposition party had hired. This was followed by an ugly scuffle, which later stalled the voting process.

As the count began, Sarathkumar and team seemed be in the lead. Things though took a turn in the latter half of the evening, as the Pandavar Ani won by a close margin.
