Some of the top actors in South films like Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, and Mohanlal have been given demi-god status by fans, and they have more often than not played the role of good men, always standing up for what is right and fighting evil in every form. Very rarely do we see lead actors who have a huge fan base ever risk playing a negative role. Rajinikanth started off his career by playing an anti-hero in a few of his movies like Avargal (1977) and 16 Vayathinile (1977), in his own unique style which made him the baddie people loved to hate. Mammootty played negative role in movies like the suspense thriller Munnariyippu (2014) and Vidheyan (1994) for which he received the National Award for Best Actor. Not many lead actors took the same risk as the Thalaivaa but some played a grey character while a few were seen playing a dark character. Here is our list of the few leading actors who dared to play negative roles:
VikramChiyaan Vikram, the Kollywood hunk known for playing the role of the muscular hero rescuing everyone in need, played the role of modern day Raavan in the 2010 Mani Ratnam movie Raavanan.
Jagapathi BabuThe Tollywood hero, Jagapathi, played a negative role in the Vikram-starrer Kollywood movie Thandavam in 2012.
Kunchacko BobanThe actor known for playing the quintessential chocolate boy in Mollywood was for the first time seen playing a grey role in the movie Seniors (2011).
Sundeep KishanThe young actor known to be one of the most popular Tollywood actors played a negative role in the movie Prasthanam (2010).
Nivin PaulyThe Mollywood actor everyone loves played a negative role in the movie Da Thadiya (2012).
While many shied away from playing dark roles, these mainstream heroes showed us that they can entertain and terrify us at the same time even if it means they have to play villainous roles, which is not really what they are known (and loved) for.
