For the longest time, the only kind of heroine-oriented stories that were allowed in Bollywood featured revenge or a woman fighting for survival. Five years ago, on this very day, we saw the story of a woman who chose to nurture her ambition and fight for success instead. The Dirty Picture, directed by Milan Luthria, turned out be more than just “entertainment, entertainment, entertainment”. It is, perhaps, one of the most refreshing films Bollywood has ever produced.
Although the filmmakers declared that the film is not based on Silk Smitha alone, but inspired from the lives of many of her contemporaries, there are a few facts that hold true for both – the actress, Silk Smitha and the protagonist in the film, Reshma (Vidya Balan).
Here they are:
The dream of becoming a character actor
In an interview, Silk Smitha revealed that she had always wanted to be a character actor doing “serious cinema”. However, she continued to accept the kind roles that would help “sell” a film.
Relationship with the media
The media often accused her of being disrespectful towards senior filmmakers. To which she responded, “If it were true, then nobody will be casting me in their films. Why should I treat my producers badly when I know very well that I wouldn’t have been what I am but for them?”
