6 Bollywood films based on true stories

 Films based on true stories/real life incidents have always intrigued us. We get to see the portrayal of popular people, played by famous stars. Bollywood loves churning out inspiration from ‘real events’. Some of these films have raked in big moolah at the box-office, while others have earned the accolades from critics. Such films prove that a great movie doesn’t necessarily need ‘masala’ elements like punch dialogues or  over-the-top stunts to fair well at the box-office. The audience loves watching a good movie based on real stories. Some characters serve as an inspiration, while others bring in an interesting element to the film. Take a look at some popular Bollywood films that have been inspired from real-life events:

Manjhi – The Mountain Man
 
 
The film is based on the real life story of a villager named Manjhi, who embarked on a project after his wife died, due to medical negligence. He wondered why one had to take a circuitous 70-km route around a mountain to get medical help when the distance was merely 5-6 kms. He then began cutting through the mountain with his bare hands, using only a hammer and chisel. He finally accomplished the task after a pain-stalking 22 years (1960-1982). He died in 2007 and the Bihar government gave him a state funeral.
 
Mountain Man is director Ketan Mehta’s fourth biopic after Sardar (Based on the life of Sardar Patel with Paresh Rawal in the title role), Mangal Pandey: The Rising (The soldier behind the Indian Mutiny of 1857) and Rang Rasiya (Chronicled the life of artist Raja Ravi Varma). Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, Manjhi – The Mountain Man this film is slated to release on August 21.
 
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai
 
 
Directed by Milan Luthria and set in the ’80s, this film was based on the Mumbai Underworld. The film depicted the crime and smuggling and its connection with international terrorism . It is believed to be based on the lives of real-life gangsters Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim, portrayed by Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi, respectively. Originally, Sanjay Dutt was chosen to play the role of Haji Mastan but the role went to Ajay Devgn instead.
 
Special 26
 
 
Based on a daring jewellery heist that took place almost 25-years ago, Special 26 put focus on the Opera House heist of 1987. Men posing as Central Bureau of Investigation officers on a raid, walked away with jewellery worth millions of rupees. Directed by Neeraj Pandey and starring Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher, the film was one of the hits in 2013.
 
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
 
 
One of the highest grossers of 2013, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was based on the life of  Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete, a national champion runner and an Olympian. Starring Farhan Akhtar The film portrayed the life of Milkha Singh, and also showed us pre-independent India. The share of the profits was given to the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust.
 
Paan Singh Tomar
 
 
 
This fascinating Indian biopic is based on the life of an Indian athlete named Paan Singh Tomar -A soldier in the Indian Army, whose impressive athlete skills won him medals at the National games. Circumstances compel him to become a bandit. The film was the Best Feature Film at the 60th National Awards. Irrfan Khan went on to win the award for Best Actor at the National Awards.
 
Guru
 
 
Starring Abhishek Bachchan and directed by Mani Ratnam, this film is loosely based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani (Founder of Reliance industries). The film was premiered in the Tous Les Cinemas du Monde (World Cinema) section of 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
