6 Sci-Fi Movies of Bollywood

If someone asks you to list out five sci-fi Bollywood movies, which is the first movie that comes to your mind? Krrish is one; or if you are a 90s kid, Mr. India perhaps, and then you go blank. It is true. We are not very well-aware of the sci-fi movies of our own film industry.

We are so used to associating superheroes and aliens with Hollywood that we just ignore our own movies. You might be interested to know that it is widely believed that E.T. – The Extra Terrestrial (1982) (which is probably one of your favorite movies) was inspired by the short story Bankubabur Bandhu by Satyajit Ray. This short story was also under production as a film in the 1960s with the name The Alien but was eventually shelved.

There are many sci-fi movies that date back to a time when most of us sci-fi lovers weren't around. For the record, let's look at some of the famous sci-fi movies of Bollywood:

Mr. India (1987)
Mr India - BookMyShow
Mr. India is a superhero science fiction movie, which was also the highest grossing movie of 1987. Not only the movie was a huge hit, the characters in the movie are still remembered. Mogambo became synonymous to the name Amrish Puri and the dialogue became a villain classic. Mr. India is till date the most famous of all the movies based on the concept of invisibility. Other movies on the same plot line are Mr. X in Bombay (1964), Elaan (1971), Mr. X (2015), and Gayab (2004).

Koi… Mil Gaya (2003)
Koi Mil Gaya - BookMyShow
Koi… Mil Gaya, widely regarded as Bollywood's first sci-fi film, features a plot that can be found to be very similar with the 1982-Hollywood hit E.T. – The Extra Terrestrial. The movie played a very important role in Hrithik Roshan's career (and we still somewhere see a bit of Rohit in any character that he plays). The National Award-winning film was followed by two sequels – Krrish and Krrish 3.

Aa Dekhen Zara (2009)
Aa Dekhen Zara - BookMyShow
Aa Dekhen Zara is the story of a struggling photographer who inherits a magical camera from his grandfather who was a scientist. The photographs produced by the camera predict the future and this takes Ray (Neil Nitin Mukesh) from rags to riches. The film fared moderately well on the box office and sources say the movie lost steam because other films of the same theme released the following week – 8 x 10 Tasveer and Kal Kissne Dekha.

Love Story 2050 (2008)
Love Story 2050 - BookMyShow
Love Story 2050 was based on the concept of time-travel. The film marked the debut of Harman Baweja, son of director Harry Baweja. The film looked promising before its release but it was a huge box-office disaster.

Ra.One (2011)
RaOne - BookMyShow
Ra.One was the dream project of Shah Rukh Khan, a science fiction superhero film starring himself, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Rampal. It was based on the concept of machines taking over humans. The film fared well on the box-office but was not really declared a hit. The critics highly praised the visuals and music but the story and direction was criticised. Another movie on the same plot is Robot starring Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

PK (2014)
PK - BookMyShow
PK was yet another alien movie starring Aamir Khan. This movie was a satirical take on religion. This movie is considered the highest grossing film of the Indian Film Industry till date and also the first Indian film to earn INR 7 billion.
