The love triangle, the family angle, romance, dance, songs, fights, hero vs villain – these are some of the biggest Bollywood clichés and have been used as a plot enhancer since times immemorial. We tend to give more importance to the cast rather than the script. And this might be the reason why we are not able to explore other genres or topics for our films.
When we look at Hollywood, there are numerous examples of films based on unconventional topics beyond science and reality. No doubt they have an upper hand when it comes to using high-end technology and special effects. But what should be noticed is their constant effort in exploring newer themes and topics.
While we love our Bollywood masalas and would prefer to watch `Hum Aapke Hain Koun` or `Kuch Kuch Hota Hai` during our moments of depression, here are some themes and topics Bollywood should try exploring more to create superior content.
Grey human emotions
Bollywood should stop setting unrealistic expectations among people by portraying people and situations in the strict good and bad categories. Humans are complex beings and our lives are full of grey aspects and emotions. Bollywood should try portraying these very real human emotions on screen and make films look more realistic.
Bollywood has made some attempts in this genre with films like No Smoking, Manorama Six Feet Under and Ugly, but a little more variety and creativity would not harm anyone. When you look at Hollywood films like The Machinist, Requiem for a Dream, The Descent or 1984, you are left wondering when will we get to see this in apna Bollywood.
India is a land of great scientists and history is the proof that we have had our own science heroes like Satyendra Nath Bose, Homi Jehangir Bhabha, Srinavasa Ramanujan. However, we are still not comfortable with making a film on scientists or exploring the sci-fi genre. Some attempts were made by films like Ra.One and Krrish, however, we still have a long way to go to match the standards of world cinema when it comes to this captivating film genre.
Getting transported in a fantastic world full of wonderful creatures and experiences is the best form of escapism. The Harry Potter film series, The Lord of the Rings series, The Wizard of Oz, How To Train Your Dragon etc. are some of the greatest fantasy films of all time. Bollywood, are you listening? We'd love to see good sci-fi Bollywood movies.
India is a treasure house where you can find the most fascinating mythologies, which if converted into films, can exhibit our rich literature and culture. Vedas, Puranas, the Sangam literature are some of the most famous Indian mythologies with stories about gods, demigods, apsaras, demons, spirits, humans, and every topic one earth you can imagine. Isn’t it a wonderful storage of ideas that our Bollywood directors can make a film on?
