Monster Hunt: Film Review – Monsters Were Never So Cute

Verdict: An adventure film filled with loads of action.

Cute monster? An oxymoron but such is the truth when you have just watched Monster Hunt. Huba, the cute monster is the child of a human man, Song Tianyin (Jing Boran) and a monster queen. Abandoned by his mother, Huba is taught to live life, the human way, which essentially means he needs to eat fruits and vegetables rather than drink blood. The plot twists when both humans and monsters want to kill Huba. Luo Gang (Jiang Wu) wants to trade the monster for some money while Ge Qianhu (Wallace Chung) wants to serve him to his esteemed guests. Now it is up to Song and his good friend, Hua Xiaolan (Bai Baihe) to save Huba.

The film’s plot is a bit bizarre as you have a man getting pregnant and he delivers the baby through his mouth. Given that it is a fantasy world, you pardon this. Also, the dialogues and situations are funny, giving you less time to notice the flaws.

Raman Hui is no stranger to this genre as he has previously worked on Shrek the Third and Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five. The director does a fabulous job and keeps the action going. The animation is top notch too.

Jing and Bai enjoy most of the screen time and deliver decent performances. The chemistry between them is great and they make a lovely pair on screen. Jiang Wu is endearing as the monster hunter and though his character has a selfish motive, it’s hard to hate him. The film’s only problem is the run time. It tends to stretch a bit and would have worked better if it wasn’t two hours long.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Monster Hunt may rely on a weak script, but nonetheless, it is an entertaining film. The monsters are adorable and will absorb you into their fantasy world. For that alone, it’s worth a watch.
