7 Actors Who Turned Down Iconic Roles

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when a big film project is announced? You wonder about the cast, don’t you? Few stars seem as if they were born to play a particular role. Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Ian McKellen as Gandalf or Harrison Ford as Hans Solo, for instance. One cannot think of any other actor but them playing those characters. Then again, there’s more than meets the eye. Some roles that are so etched in our minds were often offered to other stars before who turned them down for a variety of reasons. Then, you thank them for refusing because imagine The Dark Knight without Heath Ledger as The Joker. We give you a list of some actors who turned down some epic roles:

Julia Roberts (Annie Reed in Sleepless in Seattle)

Actors get choosy after delivering a blockbuster. Julia Roberts did too after tasting success with Pretty Woman. Three years after the movie, the actress was offered the highly successful film Sleepless in Seattle, but she decided not to star in it. Now try and imagine an Annie Reed who is not Meg Ryan. Apparently, Kim Basinger too was offered the role.

Britney Spears (Allie Hamilton in The Notebook)

This is quite surprising, isn’t it? We really can’t imagine Britney Spears romancing Ryan Gosling. It seems Jessica Biel, Reese Witherspoon and Ashley Judd also auditioned for the role, which eventually was made famous by Rachel McAdams, of course.

Jennifer Lawrence (Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga series)

Bella Swan pretty much turned Kristen Stewart into the star she is today. How different would things be though had Jennifer Lawrence not turned down the role when it was offered to her?  Now, we do know some fans of The Hunger Games actress would be glad she wasn’t picked to play Bella but then, haters gonna hate.

Lindsay Lohan (Regina George in Mean Girls)

Lindsay Lohan was initially offered to play the role of the ‘mean’ girl in this now cult film but she chose to play Cady Heron instead. Considering all that Lindsay finds herself in the news for, we think this one is not without a hint of irony.

Anne Hathaway (Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook)

Did you know that the Anne Hathaway was first approached to play Jennifer Lawrence’s role in Silver Linings Playbook? Anne decided to walk out of the project citing creative differences with director David O. Russell. She was to star opposite Mark Wahlberg, who too dropped out making way for Bradley Cooper. Jennifer Lawrence went on to win an Oscar for her role that year (2012). No biggie! Anne Hathaway bagged the Academy Award the same year too for her performance in Les Miserables.

Emilia Clarke (Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey)

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke was first approached to play the role of the ‘naive’ and ‘innocent’ Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey. She turned the role down because she didn’t want to be known as the actress who regularly went nude in her movies. Yes, think Daenerys Targaryen and you wouldn’t really blame Emilia.

John Travolta (Forrest Gump in Forrest Gump)

John Travolta was indeed the first choice to play the title role in Forrest Gump, a character that of course, has been immortalised by Tom Hanks. The Grease actor has time and again stated refusing the role remains one of the biggest mistakes of his career. While we agree but would we have anybody else but Tom Hanks playing Forrest? Most probably, not
