Folks in our Hindi film industry are immensely talented. We are really blessed with some amazing actors who have proved their mettle time and again. But sometimes, their performances don’t get the credit they deserve. The moolah and the limelight still go to the usual faces, the ones who have enjoyed celebrity status for decades. We think it is high time that the award function organizers take note, and maybe rise above the general frills-and-foxes, and give credit where it is long overdue. We have listed seven actresses who we think are supremely talented but just haven’t attained the stardom they have earned.
1. Swara Bhaskar
With three big performances in Tanu Weds Manu (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), Swara Bhaskar has definitely impressed us. The dusky actress gave stellar performances in all these films. But we’d love to see her in meatier roles where she can show off more of her acting skills.
2. Konkona Sen Sharma
This bong bombshell is a powerhouse performer. The actress doesn’t disappoint, no matter what the role. Whether it was Meenakshi Iyer from Mr. and Mrs. Iyer or Aisha Banerjee from Wake up Sid, she held her own. We can’t wait to see her in Talvar!
3. Richa Chadda
Richa Chadda is another actress whose performances are right up there with the best. Her recent role in Masaan confirms it. Richa won Critics Awards for Best Actress for her role in the Wasseypur movies.
Tabu has won a Padma Shri and that isn’t the only reason we say the actress knows her craft. Her filmography is a testament to her versatility as an actor. From Maachis to Hera Pheri, and from Cheeni Kum to Haider, she has done it all!
5. Divya Dutta
One of the leading faces in parallel cinema, Divya is another stunning actress in Bollywood. She has played some great roles and was lauded for her performance as Ishri Kaur, the sister of Milkha Singh in the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
6. Nandita Das
Actor, director Nandita Das is the queen of parallel Indian cinema. A world into which our mainstream, Bollywood-loving audience seldom ventures. She has worked in over 30 feature films and was awarded ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters’ by the French government, a prestigious civil award.
7. Nimrat Kaur
A fairly recent addition to the ranks, the actress was praised for her performance in The Lunchbox opposite Irrfan Khan. She is a good actress and we hope to see her in better roles. Her next movie Airlift is expected in 2016.
