7 Must-Have Characters of A Bollywood Family Film

Bollywood is known for films about families. These are films we cannot get enough of. Consider any example – Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!; we all have watched these movies as many times as Star Gold broadcasts Sooryavansham, we have cried every single time (not just for Sooryavansham).

We love these movies undoubtedly but what we love more are the few characters that are a must-have for the plot of such films. The dutiful son, his obedient wife, the inevitable no-gooder, the disciplinarian yet helpless father, the occasional wonderdogs (a Rajshri specialty) and what not. Let’s have a look at some typical Bollywood "family" members that all Bollywood lovers love to watch (or just watch Hum Saath – Saath Hain):

An Idealistic Son
Salman Khan - BookMyShow
The hero of the film and the most eligible bachelor. He is the one who follows his family’s ideals throughout life. He will never do any wrong and will sacrifice anything for his family (or newly-wed wife).

An Unmarried Beautiful Female
Sonam Kapoor - BookMyShow
The susheel female lead whose character is more pure than purified water certified by Hema Malini is beautiful and family-oriented. This makes her the most eligible for a marriage too. She will compete the son in terms of sacrifices with a smile on her face (Think Tabu from Hum Saath – Saath Hain; just think, don’t watch *that* movie again).

A Strict Babuji
Amitabh Bachchan - BookMyShow
An idealistic person who has been following and preserving the parampara and honor of the family since conception. He will go all out to make sure he can walk with his head high in the society (unless one of his kids decide to marry someone he doesn’t like). He loves his family too. More often than not, this WILL be Alok Nath in a movie.

A Dedicated Wife
Reema Lagoo - BookMyShow
The one married woman of the family who is of utmost importance. She is the reason behind the happy family and all the family members with a paunch. She loves her children more than her husband but when asked to choose between the two, she chooses the husband (with the big house). *cough* Reema Lagoo *cough*

A Chamcha/Chamchi Friend
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham - BookMyShow
This is one person who will be friends with the lead for no rhyme or reason. We suspect this is an actor who has fallen out of favor and could do with some footage. You cannot expect a scene when they are in their own house and you begin to wonder if they have one in the first place. They will always be next to the lead, ready to stay with the family and assist him/her free of cost in all the madness-soaked endeavors. Chipkoo freeloader alert!

A Family-like Member
Satish Shah - BookMyShow
A friend in need is the friend indeed is the mantra of a family-like member. They can be anybody from an old friend to a Satish Shah who sticks with the family through its ups and downs. They will always ring the doorbell to ask for ek katori cheeni but will also have the doors of their heart open for everything.

A Vamp/Villain
Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo - BookMyShow
And here comes our favorite part. These are the characters who look the best throughout; Hum Saath-Saath Hain is an exception in which it is quite the frightful opposite. They have the best designer outfits and accessories and their make-up is just WOW. Also, they are the reason (apart from strict babuji) the family suffers.
