Throwback Thursday: 7 Comedy Gems of Bollywood

Making people laugh with your words and antics is a difficult job, which a very few excel at. Bollywood movies with all their larger-than-life scenarios and glamor wouldn’t be as entertaining without a tinge of humor. Even the most serious movies have that one character who provides comic relief. These actors who do such roles might never be the leads but they do steal the show with their comic timing and their ability to make people laugh. There are various types of comedy and comedians whose comic antics might not amuse everyone. But we have a few gems who have managed to make us have that tummy-ache laughter every time we see them on screen.

Johnny Walker

As his namesake, he was known best for enacting a role of a drunkard with perfection. He was born Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi and he is the only comedian who has had songs made for him like Sar Jo Tera Chakraye and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. He was truly a jack of all trades and master of comedy. He was a producer and a director along with an actor who did excellent comic roles. His Hyderabadi-Urdu accent only added to his spontaneous antics that made us laugh hard.

Keshto Mukherjee

His Charlie Chaplin-like moustache and on-screen drunkuness, made him a popular choice for comic roles. He has also tried his hand with other genres of cinema, but it was comedy where he truly shined. His roles in Padosan, Chupke Chupke and Sholay have left a lasting impression on people’s mind and is still remembered for it.


This Angrezo ke zamaane ka jailer needs no introduction had us splitting in laughs and although it might be his most popular role, he has acted in numerous movies since 1967 and still continues to do so. Little known fact about him is that he is also a singer having sung a duet with Kishore Kumar in the movie Phool Khile Gulshan Gulshan.

Johnny Lever

He is India’s first stand-up comedian and regularly performs stand-up shows all across the nation. He has more than 300 movies to his credit as a comic relief. His comedy is currently unmatched and with him in the movie you know you are going to have a laugh. He has also won two Filmfare awards for his work.

Paresh Rawal

He is an excellent theatre and movie artist, who is very versatile when it comes to his acting style. He has played a fair share of villains and comic roles in his movies. Roles like Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, Manilal (Awaara Paagal Deewana) and Batuk Shankar (Bhool Bhulaiyaa) wouldn’t be the same without him. Who can forget him with his question marked-head in Judaai?

Kader Khan

His comedy is not only evident in his performance as an actor but also as a scriptwriter. He has written numerous movies which were well appreciated by the audience. He also has tried his hand at other roles before settling with comedy.

Boman Irani

He had a late start with his Bollywood career but his has been an upward trend. He manages to make people laugh with all the roles he has performed. He is also a master of disguise and has transformed himself for almost every role he has taken up.

Raajpal Yadav

Hearing this name brings an instant smile to our face as we remember his antics on screen with movies like Hulchul and Waqt (who can forget Laxman?). He started his work with really minor roles before making his niche in comedy.
