8 Kollywood game changers we wish to see in 2014

Indian cinema turned 100 last year, but how much has really changed over the years? Tamil cinema has always managed to grab headlines, with its array of superstars and fresh stories. Like every other year, 2013 has been an eventful one with a mixed bag of hits, flops and some high grossers.  But there was something different about last year. It had some budding talent, some pristine stories which turned into sleeper hits and some unconventional storytelling. 2013 also witnessed some forceful derailing comedies and some controversial releases. Here’s a list of what we would like to watch and what we wouldn’t want to in 2014. The wishlist of a movie buff:

Actors

1.  Queen Bees

Nayantara is quite probably the flavor of the season.  Delivering big hits like Raja Rani and Aarambam, she made a comeback so compelling that she was back in top form again. This year she has movies with ex-flame Simbu in a Pandiraj movie, a Jayam Raja-Jayam Ravi project, Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal and Anamika in her kitty, the comeback queen is indeed here to stay.

Trisha, the ever-gorgeous lady, who has completed a decade in the film industry, charmed the audience in her recent hit Endrendrum Punagai. Her loveable character hypnotized the audience to fall in love with her. Often linked with Rana Dagupathi and addressing him as a ‘special friend’, rumors stay strong that the actress might get hitched this year. Whether or not that happens, we wish to see the actress in more movies this year. She will be seen in Boologam in 2014.

Anushka, the sultry actress is sure a crowd-puller. With a very strong base in Andhra and Tamil Nadu, she is one of the most popular faces for mythological movies. Currently she is working on a magnum opus, Bahubali. Even though Irandam Ulagam didn’t prove lucky for this beautiful siren, it still won her accolades for the role. It would be a treat for her fans to watch her in her new film.

We would also really wish to see these lovely leading ladies dub for themselves in Tamil films. It would add a new element to the film and a definite change for Tamil audience who have been listening to dubbing artists in films more than a decade now. After all these years they would’ve surely mastered to speak the language.

2.     Youth Icons

He is probably the poster boy of unconventional cinema. A perfect example of perseverance and hardwork.  Vijay Sethupathi tasted success starring in short films and gradually made his entry in films. Due to him choosing strong subject-driven roles and having a distinct acting ability, Vijay Sethupathi became the icon for youth. He starred as a 40 year-old kidnapper in the black comedy Soodhu kavum and as a local jobless goon in Idharkudhane Aasaipatai Balakumara. He also successfully delivered ‘Aanachii, Kumudha happy aanachi’ which became quite a rage among the youth. His next is with in Arya, Shyam multistarrer Poramboku and Vasanthakumaran who’s first look has recently been unveiled. We can’t to see him in character-driven yet super stylish roles

This television-turned-TV host had very successful year in Kollywood. 3 out of 4 movies running for 100 days and earning him a much-deserved hattrick. Sivakarthiken stars predominantly in films where comedy was the main genre. His effortless acting and impeccable comic timing made the audience want for more. But the audience also want to see him in diverse roles, a genre apart from comedy. We really wish to see him in a serious role before the audience terms his acting to be clichéd and stereotype.

3.     Superstars

2014 started with jubilation in Kollywood with Vijay and Ajith clashing with each other at the box office this festive season. Both Veeram and Jilla were a lot different from their previous releases Aarambam and Thalaiva which released the previous year. Their immense screen presence and massive fanbase made them the stars they are today. They are perhaps the only actors who make an average script into a blockbuster. We would definitely like to see them in movies where the story is just as great as their stardom and not just watch them in ‘masala’ commercial entertainers. We would like to see them both turning unconventional stories into blockbusters.

4.     Bankable lover boys

Arya is the current lover boy of Tamil cinema. 2013 was an interesting year for him with 4 big releases. Arya’s charm and quick wit makes him one of the most desirable actors in tinsel town. Given the number of hits he has delivered over a brief span, Arya has earned the title of a bankable hero. We wish to see this handsome hunk in a variety of roles this year.

Although he gave his career’s best performance in Ameer’s Aadhi Bhagavan the movie turned out to be a damp squib at the box office. Jayam Ravi hasn’t had a very good innings lately, for this talented actor. High hopes are on Jayam Ravi this year for the much-awaited release of Boologam opposite Trisha.

Movies

1.      Unconventional storyline

2013 saw a unique talent of short filmmakers who made feature films with a distinct storyline. Be it Soodhu Kavum, Neram or Highly acclaimed Moodar Koodam , these cleverly scripted films won the attention of the audience. Films like Thanga Meengal, Pardesi and Haridas even though average at the box office, were films that set benchmarks in the Tamil cinema. We wish to see more of  refreshing and thoughtful stories.

2.      Newbies

Kollywood witnessed a stream of new faces in 2012 and 2013 some of whom proved to be talented while others didn’t seem to make a big impression. Among the promising debutants, Dinesh who starred in Attakathi seemed to make a mark as a roadside romeo with his naturally flawless acting in his debut movie. This technician-turned-actor seemed to have disappeared last year. Another most promising debutant is Malyalam actor Nivin Pauly who took Tamil audience by storm in his Tamil-Malayalam bilingual film, Neram. We wish to see this talented actor in a whole bunch of movies this year Other notable mentions include Sri of Vazhuku en 18 fame and Kadal fame Gautham Karthik, Pizza 2 fame Ashok Selvan and Ashwin kakamanu who recently appread in IDAPBK. We wish these bunch of new faces who will add a new dimension to tamil cinema.

 3.    Universal Superstars

Surrounded with controversies Vishwaroopam’s 1st installment, a spy thriller witnessed a massive opening, making it the blockbuster of the year. The credits of the success goes to its auteur universal hero Kamal Hassan. In 2014 Vishwaroopam 2 is one of the most anticipated movies. Whether or not this also attracts controversy, we have to wait and watch.

Kochadaiyan  Starring the one and only superstar Rajinikanth, Directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth this film  has been in the making for nearly 2 years. It also stars the current queen of Bollywood Deepika Padukone who will dub for herself in the film. We can’t wait for it to hit the screens hopefully this April.

4.     Big Directors

The immensely talent actor, Vikram has kept a low profile since he has committed to Shankar’s Ai. This actor has wins hands down when it comes to variety. He has been spotted in various forms for this character which can only tell how dedicated he is. This film also stars Amy Jackson in the lead role. One always carries lot of expectations from Shankar who makes high-budget vigilante films.

Lingusamy Joins hands with Surya for the 1st time in a recently titled movie Anjaan . Dhanush teams with up ace cinematographer turned director for Anegan  who has delivered massive hits in the recent years. We are expecting the movies to hit the theatres this year. This was my list wish list of Tamil cinema in 2014. If there is something to top this list it would definitely mean more dimensions to cinema with more enigmatic talent. To see if this wishlist comes true, we just have to wait and watch.
