Bollywood is famous for designer outfits, chiselled abs and all the glitz and glam. Actors are always expected to look picture perfect. But sometimes the script requires them to stay away from the glitter and get into the reality of the character`s life. And bowing to the industry’s call for versatility, many actors have experimented with different roles and looks.
Over the years, we have seen some of our favorite stars portraying characters we can never imagine them in. Roles which required them to go de-glam and where the only way to win hearts was by showing their acting skills. And they really won over all. Here are eight actors who went de-glam for their roles and nailed it:
Shah Rukh Khan – Fan
The lakhon-dilo-ki-dhadkan, the ever charming, Shah Rukh Khan played a 25-year old Delhi boy who was his almost lookalike. Even after all the prosthetic used, his look was kept extremely non-glam and next door.
Alia Bhatt – Highway
It was her second movie and a big change from the character in her first. Veera was nowhere near the fashionista she played in SOTY. Here, she was required to look like a girl-next-door and her entire shoot was completed in just 3-4 changes. She completely proved her mettle in this one.
Deepika Padukone – Piku
The leggy lass played a very simple Bengali girl in the movie. She wore simple kurti/tees, denims and kajal throughout the movie and carried off the look with flair.
Priyanka Chopra – Barfi
Priyanka has always been seen in super glamorous roles and Jhilmil in the film Barfi turned he image upside-down. She played an autistic girl and was almost unrecognisable in the trailer of the movie. She made everyone believe that acting needs no glamour.
Sonakshi Sinha – Lootera
The quintessential Indian beauty and the former fashion designer played Pakhi Roy Choudhary, an asthma patient, in Lootera. The character required minimal make-up and Sonakshi just used kohl to get the tragic look. Her performance in the film was highly appreciated.
Ranbir Kapoor – Barfi
He has always experimented with his roles and we have seen him in unconventional looks in many movies like Rockstar, Bombay Velvet and Besharam. But the film that takes the cake away is Barfi, in which in spite of playing a mute character, he conveyed so many emotions effortlessly.
Kangana Ranaut – Queen
Queen can easliy be considered Kangana’s performance of a lifetime. She played a shy and innocent yet gutsy Delhi girl whose wardrobe started with kurtis and ended at salwar kameez. She also won a National Award for this film.
Saif Ali Khan – Omkara
The Nawab of Bollywood has been in the industry for quite long and belonged to the Chocolate Boy category. But then came Omkara. The rugged character of Langda Tyaagi is by far one of his best performances.
While we love these actors in their starry avatars, these characters make loving them truly worth it. Keep these surprising roles coming, guys!
