Breaking The Image Of A Chocolate Boy: Kunchacko Boban

If anyone had a dream debut in 1990's Mollywood, it was Kunchacko Boban. His role of a boy in love with a girl from a different religious background catapulted the actor to stardom.

His debut with the movie Aniyathipraavu (1997) could very well be considered sort of an announcement to the world that Mollywood has finally got a romantic actor while the big superstars were busy with action films. Aniyathipraavu not only gave us a heartthrob but it also made us notice the fantastic chemistry between Kunchacko Boban and Shalini who was once our Baby Shalini.

Chackochan as he is fondly called made the bike (Hero Honda Splendor) he used in his debut a style symbol among college-going boys.

He was never reluctant to star in multi-starrer movies like Harikrishnan which had experienced superstars like Mohanlal and Mammootty playing the lead roles. Even now, superstars fear being overshadowed by another actor in a multi-starrer movie, but not Chackochan. He went on to appear in many multi-starrer movies like Dosth (2001), Kalyanarama(2002) and Swapnakoodu (2003).

These movies according to his critics, however, put him mainly into stereotypical romantic hero roles which got a little repetitive. It is only around 2011 that he started experimenting with his looks and roles. The negative roles he played in the movie Traffic and Seniors shut down his critics who did not believe he could do versatile roles. His next couple of movies were superhits, and it was as if he wanted to prove everyone wrong. His roles in Vishudhan (2013), Ordinary (2012), and How Old Are You? (2014) are examples of his ability to do versatile roles.
