From a few years, Bollywood movies have become more socially concerned than they ever were. The number of movies containing a social message or learning have significantly increased, including movies that deal with subjects related to mental or physical health. Taking a cue from Anand's lymphosarcoma of the intestine, these movies, in their own quirky ways, educated the viewers about the illness and with the right way to deal with it.
Black revolved around a deaf-blind girl played by Rani Mukerji and her teacher, played by Amitabh Bachchan, who develops Alzheimer's disease. Black is a beautiful story of not giving up on life despite the struggles.
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
This movie beautifully depicts the life of a little boy Ishaan and how he struggles in doing regular things in daily life. This movie explored the symptoms of dyslexia and how it can be dealt with. It told us that every child is special, you just need to let them fly in the direction they want to.
This action thriller depicted the life of a business tycoon suffering from anterograde amnesia or commonly called as short term memory loss. Played by Aamir Khan the character of Sanjay Singhania could remember things only for 15 minutes unless he is reminded of his past.
A movie where Abhishek Bachchan played the father of his father in real life – Amitabh Bachchan. The movie revolved around progeria, a disorder that accelerates aging. The disease is so rare that the number of its patients are less than 100 all over the world.
My Name is Khan (2010)
This film showed none other than King Khan in a character suffering from Asperger's syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism. But the film tried to prove that in spite of all odds a person can still find happiness if understood and treated normally.
This Sanjay Leela Bhansali's drama depicted quadriplegia. This was the story of an illusionist who is left paralyzed neck down after a magic trick goes wrong. The film also dealt with euthanasia (mercy killing), which sparked a debate after the movie.
This sweet movie was an attempt to reinforce that even autistic people have a right to find true love. Autism can be characterized by repetitive and impaired social behavior and Priyanka Chopra pulled off this role like a pro.
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017)
The duo from Dum Laga Ke Haisha came together for another movie where they had a bigger problem to deal with – erectile dysfunction. The film revolved around the handling the ED issue and its repercussions on their marriage and families.
Rani Mukerji is making a comeback to the silver screen after a long break of four years. She will be seen playing the lead of the movie – Naina Mathur who is suffering from Tourette Syndrome. The movie revolves around her dream of becoming a teacher, the challenges she will face, and her will to succeed.
