Our country has two things in abundance – coal and engineers. While coal mines are found only at a few places in the country, engineers are found everywhere, in every field possible (including coal mines). One place that engineers are filling up quite rapidly (apart from banking) is the stand-up comedy circuit. And one such engineer with a chemical locha..urr…chemical degree is Abhishek Upmanyu.
Upmanyu is one of the most famous and sought after comedians when it comes to Hindi stand-ups. He entered the scene in 2013 and has killed it with his fast deliveries (jokes, not babies) and skilled hands (he uses them to write). Popularly known as the GareebGuy on Twitter, Upmanyu hails from Delhi but nothing except his accent sounds like Delhi. He is this thin and nerdy looking guy who kills…on stage. His body language and mannerisms are enough for you to fall off laughing, let alone the jokes.
His material is mostly based on his experiences and observation, and he has some unparalleled observational powers. He also remembers stuff from his childhood and the way he speaks of it, his childhood was way entertaining than any of us, but only for us, not for him. Ever since he moved to Mumbai with dreams of making it big in the comedy scene, his daily life has been giving him some crazy material. He is going the right way, we think.
His stand-up specials are mostly house full along with his trial shows. Currently, he has a stand-up special going on called Thoda Saaf Bol where he is trying to clearly funny and audible. His trial shows generally go by the name Lazy Writing because only some of this lazy writing becomes a part of the stand-up special, nonetheless, all of it is funny when it's coming from him.
If you have never been to one of his shows, you have been missing out on crazy laughter therapy. He keeps cracking jokes one after the other with a speed faster than the processing speed of your brain (as per the sources, he thinks faster than he speaks). No matter how hard you try, you just cannot stop LOLing because he is so relatable and funny, or maybe because someone fell off their chair laughing.
Abhishek aspires to create a material for a one-hour special but then it would just take 2 minutes of your time. Do not believe us? You can get a glimpse of his work on his self-titled YouTube channel and the Facebook page where he puts up stuff that he wants to show to the public. Or book his upcoming shows below:
