Did you ever wish to travel back in time and change the past? If yes, then you will like Vipul Shah’s latest film Action Replayy, another Bollywood, rom-com, time-travel flick. The movie is set in the ’70s with bell-bottoms, tight skirts and long side-locks, and a sure treat for those of that generation to get all nostalgic.
What is it all about?
The movie begins with young Bunty (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who is scared of getting married to Tanya because of his parent’s unsuccessful marriage. On the anniversary of his dad, Kishen (Akshay Kumar) and mom, Mala (Aishwarya Rai), Bunty decides to change the past by traveling back in time with the help of a time machine.
Bunty travels to 1975 where he finds that Kishen is a nerd and Mala bullies him. Like all old movies, Action Replayy also has a merciless villain, Kundan (Rannvijay) with a sidekick (Rajpal Yadav). There is an unending fight between Kishen’s father (Om Puri) and Mala’s mother (Kirron Kher).
After seeing the situation, Bunty decides to change Kishen’s personality and force Mala to fall in love. In the end, both Kishen and Kundan face each other in a singing competition which decides who will get Mala.
Reasons to watch
If you are a fan of Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai then go for it. Both the VJs have done a decent job and though the script hardly left any room for Kirron Kher, Om Puri and Neha Dhupia, they did quite well. Pritam’s score (some of the songs are ruling the charts currently) and Aatish Kapadia’s script (which proves that Bollywood can come up with time-travel movies) also do justice.
Problems with the movie
Although the movie was supposed to be a comedy, the first half failed and was stretched with not-so funny scenes. There was also no need for so many unnecessary songs. For a movie like Action Replayy, a tighter script and crispier dialogues were required minus the boring unending scenes throughout the first half, that may lead to walkout.
On the whole, Action Replayy is not a bad move by director Vipul Shah to show something new and unusual this Diwali. If you have not watched Hollywood time-travel movies like Back to the Future and Hot Tub Time-Machine, you will enjoy it. And lastly, although Action Replayy is not a laugh riot, it will definitely bring a smile to your face.
