AkaashVani: Movie Review

Review: Director Luv Ranjan surprised us all with Pyaar Ka Punchnama in 2011. It was an unabashed take on urban relationships. Funny, quirky and realistic. Every metropolitan guy identified with it- instant hit. AkaashVani however throws light on a whole different side of young relationships. A side that is often experienced but rarely documented. Very frankly, it is a well made film- well performed, well filmed and well directed. But the story somehow bit off more than it could chew. There were too many themes being explored along with varying degrees of intensity. From the innocence of college romance to very grave and serious marital issues (complete with dramatic background score). Then back to some fun times for a while, then switch to somewhere in between fun and drama. It was difficult to grasp the mood of the film. While there is no issue in having varied themes, the issue is with the transition from one theme to the other.

Akaash (Kartik Tiwari) and Vani (Nushrat Bharucha) meet on the first day of their college and gradually fall in love. This romance is one of the most pleasant ones captured in the recent past on screen. Quirky, funny and most importantly- the cheesy was kept to the minimum. It made you want to fall in love again. And that’s a big thing to say. So kudos Mr. Nanda! Once college ends they decide to go back to their respective hometowns and talk to their parents about each other. But when Vani reaches home, she realizes that a tragedy has struck her family. She wants to see her parents happy again so she decides to play sacrificial lamb and marry whoever they want her to marry. Now here is my issue. Is that the only way she can keep them happy- play scapegoat? Anyway, moving on… her ‘perfect match’ husband ends up being a jerk. She takes all his torture quietly. (Again, I roll my eyes in anguish.) This lovely free spirited girl we saw before the interval would have never put up with such mental and physical trauma.

Brings me back to the point I made in the beginning. I kept asking myself why would so & so character do such a thing. The answer never came. Maybe because we were not told too much about the characters in the first place. Which is why the actions of the characters were not completely justified. One can understand the girl’s family pressure; one can understand the boy’s ego. But playing sacrificial lamb for so long? Maybe if the characters were a little more developed, maybe if the husband being a jerk wasn’t dragged on for so long. There are too many why-s and maybe-s. But despite that is it a likable film.

The film can neatly be divided into three halves. The college romance, the separation and the re-union. The college romance- beautifully filmed, catchy and lovable. The separation (the marriage)- sudden switch in intensity,  grave issues, jarring background score. Re- union, again sudden and unjustified but somehow works.

All in all, it’s a well made film. More serious than one would expect, especially from the makers of Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Let’s hope the next one is less intense and more fun.

Verdict: Shows you how romance is mushy & fun but love is intense.
