Some characters from the movies become unforgettable thanks to the actors who bring them to life. It is often impossible to imagine any other individual play the part. When a film is first offered to an actor, it isn't easy to gauge how successful the project may turn out to be. Some actors land up being replaced, some leave due to prior commitments and others simply turn down the offer. Of these, some end up regretting their move, while others know for a fact that they are making the right choice.
Here is a list of some iconic characters and the actors who almost played them:
Jeremy Irons as Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs)
The role that won Anthony Hopkins an Oscar was first offered to Jeremy Irons. However, he rejected the role because he did not want to play the role of a cruel man.
Marilyn Monroe as Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany's)
Marilyn Monroe was lined up to play the role of Holly in the screen adaptation of the novel ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's’. However, Audrey Hepburn was chosen as soon as the producers came to know of her interest in the role.
Will Smith as Django (Django Unchained)
Will Smith asked Quentin Tarantino to rewrite the script of Django Unchained in order to have a more central role. Tarantino's refusal led to Smith turning down the film.
Gwyneth Paltrow as Rose (Titanic)
Apparently, Cameron wanted to cast Gwyneth Paltrow and was not impressed by Kate Winslet at first. Winslet, then, made every effort to bag the role and eventually did.
Leonardo DiCaprio as a psychopath (American Psycho)
Although Leonardo expressed an interest in playing the role, the director decided to go with Christian Bale to play the part, instead.
Jennifer Lawrence as Bella (Twilight)
Jennifer Lawrence auditioned for the role of Bella. However, her appearance wasn't considered appropriate to play the cold and delicate Bella.
Sean Connery as Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings)
Connery was approached to play the role of Gandalf. Finding the script way too strange, Connery declined the role.
Angelina Jolie as Ryan Stone (Gravity)
Angelina Jolie was the first choice to play Ryan in the sci-fi drama, Gravity. However, she was working on her film, The Land of Blood and Honey, at the time and had to turn it down.
