The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Film Review – Spider-Man’s most-thrilling battle yet!

The announcement of a Spider-Man reboot created apprehension and uncertainty. Though some skeptics changed their minds after 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, others still held that Sam Raimi‘s movies reigned superior. Though Raimi‘s films have been received favorably, the reboot has a charm of its own.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 follows Spider-Man‘s (Andrew Garfield) attempt to juggle being a superhero with being a normal young man. Apart from keeping New York City safe, he also has another challenge to face – his relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Peter is torn between his love for Gwen and the promise he made to her father.

Things are further complicated when Spider-Man comes across Electro (Jamie Foxx), an enemy more powerful than he has faced before. It doesn’t help that Electro has joined forces with Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), who’s out to get Spider-Man as well.

"You can call me Web Head, you can call me Amazing, just don’t call me late for dinner. You know what I’m sayin’?"

One of Spider-Man‘s first dialogues in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this zinger perfectly sums up Andrew Garfield‘s portrayal of the webbed superhero. Where Sam Raimi‘s films focused on the broodier side of Spider-Man, Marc Webb‘s reboot showcases his wittier side.

This is aided by Andrew Garfield, who shines in his portrayal of the titular hero. He combines Spider-Man’s effortless coolness with Peter Parker’s awkwardness. The leading lady, Emma Stone, is also charming as Gwen Stacy. In fact, the chemistry between the reel and real-life couple remains one of the highlights of the movie.

The rest of the cast also delivers stellar performances. Dane DeHaan shines in his portrayal of Harry Osborn. Unsurprisingly, Jamie Foxx also delivers a stellar performance as Electro. However, the supporting cast is what really brings the film together. Felicity Jones, Paul Giamatti and Sally Field make lasting impressions in the little screen time that they have.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is also filled with spectacular visual effects. The action scenes, in particular, are thrilling to watch, due to the effects. Inspite of the violence and the gore, the sequences still flow as smoothly as a choreographed dance.

However, even all this can’t distract from the movie’s flaws. Though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is action-packed, it takes a while for the central plot to actually begin. Although entertaining, most of the first-half still feels like a bit of a filler. However, it redeems itself by laying down the groundwork for the second-half.

Another loose end in the film is Harry Osborn. Though his character is intriguing and fairly well-defined, the movie fails to establish a deep connection between Peter and Harry, making the forthcoming events slightly unrealistic.

Why should you watch this film?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a great addition to current superhero movies. It is wonderfully-acted and directed, making it a must-watch for fans of the genre! Though it does have a few flaws, those are easy to ignore in an otherwise amazing film. If you liked 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, you can’t afford to miss this sequel!
