American Hustle: Film Review

As soon as American Hustle begins, you get thrown into a whole different world. The movie, written and directed by David O. Russell, takes place in the world of con-artists, politicians, FBI, con-jobs, love, deceit and greed. Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, the film takes us on an elaborate and marvelous story set in the ’70s Jersey. With brilliant acting and script, the audience gets treated to a superb entertainer.

The movie is about the ‘hustle’, the ‘con’. Christian Bale plays Irving Rosenfeld, a con man who falls for the mysterious and enticing Sydney Prosser, played by Amy Adams. The both of them are rather successful at the art of the con. In walks the FBI in the guise of Richie DiMaso played by Bradley Cooper. This is when the real hustle begins. The story has got twists and turns like you wouldn’t believe. The idea is that, in order to avoid prosecution, Irving and Sydney have to help the FBI. However, the whole hustle quickly snowballs into something larger than any of them could possibly imagine. As the movie goes on, the suspense and the thrill keeps building. The whole movie isn’t just about the hustle in fact. We get to see the world of the con-artist. The life that they lead, the different lies that envelope them. The cost of that life is quite evident as the story progresses.
In the end, the hustle turns into a story of survival.

There are actually tons of reasons for you to enjoy this movie. Let’s start with the direction. David O. Russell actually gives us a glimpse into the life and the world of a con artist. The script was based on the true story of the FBI AbuScam sting operation of the late ’70s.
The stellar cast of the movie shines. Christian Bale’s character is a delight to watch. He brings the character to life with a very nuanced and controlled performance. Amy Adams is a treat. She brings a certain sexuality and flirtatious energy to her role. The way the two of them act together lets you enter the mind of a con-artist. Bradley Cooper is surprising in this film. As an ambitious FBI agent who is trying to make his mark, we get to see the lengths to which he is willing to go.
However, the best performance in this movie by far is Jennifer Lawrence’s. She plays Rosalyn Rosenfeld, Irving’s wife. Her portrayal of a Bronx housewife is simply brilliant. The story meanders a little, but doesn’t bore. The whole movie is about these characters, the way they interact, scheme, love and deceive.
