Mughal-E-Azam Is Back! Are You Watching It?

The relationship between cinema and theatre has always been a give-and-take one. Early movies were inspired by their theatrical counterparts and rarely have we seen theatrical productions being inspired from movies. In 2016, after 56 years of its release, we saw what could be said is a tribute to Mughal-E-Azam. The movie that is an integral part of our cinematic history was then adapted as a musical for the stage. Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, Mughal-E-Azam opened to houseful shows and amazing reviews that year. From the setting to the costumes, everything about the musical was simply magical. The songs that we have been crooning since years were presented in a new avatar, with new compositions, and there were no complaints.

The musical became so popular among Mumbaikars that a second run of the shows was requested, where people who had seen it the first time still went ahead and saw it again. Yet, there are many who had missed seeing this classic on stage and for them, Mughal-E-Azam was back in June. With costumes by Manish Malhotra and a set that will transport you back in time, this was certainly a theatrical experience for all kinds of audiences. Ant-man And The Wasp: Film Review – A Giant Entertainer

Verdict: This movie is exactly what we needed after Avengers: Infinity War.

While all the fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and everyone else who lined up to see Avengers: Infinity War await for its sequel to release next year, Marvel has provided us with a tiny distraction. The follow-up to the 2015 movie Ant-man is finally here and it has been making statements already. Ant-man and the Wasp is the first MCU movie to have a female character’s name in the title and after watching the movie we can safely say that they have come through on it. It is also the movie that answers one of the big questions we had when we saw Avengers: Infinity War – “Where the $^#@ is Ant-man?”

What’s Ant-man and the Wasp all about:

Picking up about two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is days away from his house arrest being lifted by the FBI. Even while being under house arrest, he makes sure that his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson) has the best time when she visits him on the weekends. He has also set up a security company called X-Con Security with Luis (Michael Peña)and gang. Meanwhile, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) are on the run from the law. They are also finding a way to get Hope’s mom, Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer)back from the quantum zone. But one of their part suppliers turns rogue and at the same time, they have Ghost hunting them.

What works:

While every MCU movie is part of the same universe, each one has their own theme. Ant-man was a heist caper and nothing has changed. There is still a lot of stealing happening in this movie. The characters have matured a little and that is all you can expect from a sequel. The writers have addressed the elephant in the room (the great snap of death and dust) so they went back in time to make this movie. Paul Rudd is as charming as ever and even more so as he balances his life between being a superhero and a super dad. Evangeline Lilly steals the show in this heist caper though as the Wasp. Just as Hope Van Dyne, her character in the movie was training to be Wasp since she was very young, Evangeline Lilly seems to be born for this role.

Peyton Reed has delivered an enjoyable fest once again with a movie that has a lot of depth and at the same time has enough Hello Kitty references to ease the tension. Even the city of San Francisco has been used marvelously as you get to see the best bits during the chase sequences.

What could have been better:

While the movie was fantastic, it lacks Luis’ fine storytelling. You only get to see one story from this character.

Why you should watch this movie:

If Avengers: Infinity War was too much for you to handle, this is the perfect antidote. You get to meet new ants with very ant-like names along with getting to see the Wasp in action. There is no exact science as to how Marvel delivers smashing movies each time, we just need to know that this is definitely one of them.

P.S. There is one mid-credit scene and one post-credit scene. Watch out!

We Answer How To Have A Fun Day Imagica Theme Park

Imagine a place where you get to travel in a flying car on a mission with Mr. India or somewhere with so many loops that your head goes dizzy. Yes, you are thinking about the Imagica theme park. Started in 2013, Imagica is the first theme park of its kind to get international rides and giving them a desi twist. You get the best of thrills and chills at the same place. Off the Mumbai-Pune expressway and just 19 km away from Lonavala, you will find visitors from Mumbai, Pune, and beyond when you go to Imagica. They also have a newly added Snow Park that is surely worth the money especially in this weather.

Something for everyone:

1. If you love hair-raising rides, you should definitely try rides like Deep Space, Nitro, and Scream Machine.
2. If you like to take it easy and don’t mind a little water fun, Rajasaurus River Adventure and Splash Ahoy!.
3. People looking for star attractions need to visit Ali Baba Aur Chaalis Chor, Mr. India – The Ride, and Wrath of the Gods.
4. For the kids there are fun rides like The Magic Carousel, Tubby Takes Off, Humpty’s Fall, and Save the Pirate.

How to spend your day:

The first thing you should do as you enter the park is find an Upgrade store to get a complimentary map of the park. If you are in the park before 11 am, it is a good time to finish all the thrilling rides before you check out the attractions that start 12:30 pm onwards. If you are reaching the park after 12:00 pm, the attractions have to be your first order of business before you get on the rides. Please note your lunch break should be after you have finished the rides. During the evening you can catch the Imagica parade with a lot of selfie-worthy moments.

How to reach there:

You can either take your own vehicle or avail any of the bus or car services offered by Imagica at a fee. If you are taking your own car, look for the signs after the expressway toll (from Mumbai) to take a left for Imagica. People coming from Pune can take a left about 19 km after Lonavala.

Some tips:

1. While an express pass is the best thing you could gift yourself, if you are going to the park in June-July, you will not need it as there will not be a lot of rush.
2. The park has wheelchair accessible places. You just have to look for the signs.
3. It is better to reach as early as possible to get the full experience of the park.

For Here Or To Go?: Film Review – The NRI Movie We Need

Verdict: Narrating NRI struggles with some solid performances.
For no immigrant or a local in the USA are the words “For here or to go?” alien. It is either you are working in a fast food restaurant as a second job or you are visiting one, you get to hear this everywhere. Taking this one question that is a part of an American’s daily life, Rucha Humnabadkar manages to add a lot of meaning to it. For Here Or To Go? is one of the true attempts to show us the real side of immigrants as they face uncertainty as they are trying to build a home in a country that is yet to accept them. An impressive debut by Rucha Humnabadkar, the movie manages to pack a lot of issues inside it.

What’s For Here or To Go? About:

Vivek Pandit (Ali Fazal) is on the brink of getting his dream job. But before he can join, a problem with his work visa changes the employer’s mind and that’s when the trouble starts. Adding to the mix are his roommates Lakshmi (Omi Vaidya) and Amit (Amitosh Nagpal), who have their own sets of problems. Vivek then starts the process of job hunting where the company would also sponsor his immigration and during that time he has to make an important decision – whether he would like to stay in the USA or go back to India.

What Works:

The movie could not have come at a better time with the status of immigrants in America getting dire day by day. Rucha Humnabadkar manages to talk about many issues in the movie with Lakshmi being a closet homosexual who just got his green card and addressing the situation that a lot of immigrants face when it comes to their work visa. The performances are powerful, especially that of Amitosh Nagpal who has some of the best scenes in the movie. Rajit Kapur also shines as Vivek’s mentor in the movie.

What could have been better:

While it was a very brave approach by Rucha Humnabadkar, she chose to add a lot of things in a movie under two hours and that is the reason some of the things might feel rushed.

Why You Should Watch:

This movie is important for every immigrant and anyone who plans on immigrating. It is a feel-good story with a lot of humor and with some excellent performances by the actors. If you are looking for something new this weekend, this is the movie you should watch.
