Ribbon – Film Review – An Honest Look At Achieving Work-Life Balance

Verdict: A relatable take on modern-day marriages.

The directorial debut of Rakhee Sandilya, Ribbon, highlights the struggles of a modern-day marriage. Starring Kalki Koechlin and Sumeet Vyas, best known as Mickey a.k.a. Mikesh from the popular web-series, Permanent Roommates, the story is extremely relatable to any career-oriented couple living in a metro city. While this sounds familiar to a few movies you may have seen in the past, the performances here do manage to touch your heart.

What’s Ribbon About:

Sahana Mehra (Kalki Koechlin) and Karan Mehra (Sumeet Vyas) are happily married and extremely focused on their respective careers. Things take a turn when Sahana, who has her career path well-planned, finds out that she is pregnant. After some convincing by hubby dearest and a lot of thought, she decides to go ahead with the pregnancy.

They become parents to a little girl, Aashi, and soon face the brunt of raising a family. The post-natal period is what makes this story relatable to every other working couple. The movie also goes on to subtly display the corporate sexism that Sahana faces post-pregnancy. After dealing with constant work pressure and a demotion from a strategist to an analyst, Sahana later gets fired from her job.

Ribbon: Film Review- BookMyShowWhile the couple is trying hard to live the life they always dreamt of, the story suddenly shifts to their 3-year old daughter being molested. How the couple deals with this situation is something you to find out in cinemas.

What Works:

As we said before, the film is extremely relatable to the gen-next who wish to achieve their goals as well as raise a family at the same time. However, to achieve that perfect work-life balance, you have to make sacrifices – a concept beautifully captured in this movie.

Kalki has proved her acting prowess time and again and it goes without saying that her performance was flawless. Sumeet is also a talented actor and has delivered a spectacular performance. Despite being shot in 24 days, the team has put in an immense amount of efforts.

What Could Have Been Better:

Post-interval, the film diverts from the plot and there is a sudden change in the tone, which makes you lose that connection with the story. While Ribbon is a film that is throbbing with realism, there is nothing really new that makes you want to stick through the end.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Filled with great performances and a significant storyline, Ribbon is a must-watch for all those who love going to the theatre for some real cinema. With Bollywood being filled with brainless masala entertainers, films like Ribbon are more than welcome. So don’t miss out on this movie and book your ticket here.

The Invite For The Wedding Of The Year Is Here

The wedding season is about to begin and we have been invited to one of the biggest weddings of the year. With some of the most high-profile guests being a part of this wedding, you definitely wouldn’t want to miss this one. What are we talking about? Well, Veere Di Wedding is easily one of the most awaited films of this season and the fact that it stars two of the most stylish ladies of B-town, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor, makes it even more interesting. The makers have dropped the first look of the movie and it is all set to release in May 2018.

We are trying to get every small detail about the movie and can’t get enough of stalking the movie's official Instagram handle (@vdwthefilm), where we get to see all the off-screen shenanigans. The chemistry between the girls seems to be amazing, with no professional rivalry whatsoever.

The poster looks absolutely fab. Kareena and the girls have ditched those designer lehengas and have instead dressed in sherwanis designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla along with pink pagdis/phetas. While Kareena, Sonam and Shikha Talsania are seen having the time of their lives, Swara Bhaskar seems vary of the all shaadi madness. Don’t we all have that one friend who hates weddings? Maybe she is that friend of the group, or maybe not… While we are left guessing that, here’s wishing all the luck to the team of Veere Di Wedding. Stay tuned to the BMS Blog to get updates about the trailer and more.

Oh Lucy! Review: Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2017

Setsuko (Shinobu Terajima) is a regular middle-aged office employee in Tokyo, working her 9-5 shift and returning home. She is unmarried and looks extremely bored of her current life situation. The film is about how she enrols herself in an English class and falls in love with her teacher who also happens to be her niece’s boyfriend.

Background and Story:

After premiering her 22-minute short film Oh Lucy! three years ago at Cannes and winning the Cinefoundation Selection, Japanese filmmaker Atsuko Hirayanagi is back with the feature length version of the same film.

Oh Lucy! Review- BookMyShow

Setsuko’s niece, Mika (Shioli Kutsuna) coaxes her to take her place in the English class that she had enrolled herself for. With nothing exciting in life anyway, Setsuko agrees to do so and enters a shady looking building where the class takes place. There, she meets her English professor (from the United States), John (Josh Hartnett) and soon enough falls for his friendly and warm behaviour. John gives his Japanese students English names for ease in communication and that is how Setsuko gets the name, Lucy. Excited and anxious, she returns the next day for the class and finds out that John had resigned and flown back to the US along with her niece, Mika.

A heart-broken, Setsuko/Lucy decides to take a break from work and go on a vacation to Los Angeles to meet her niece and of course, John. After reaching there, she finds out that Mika and John are no longer together and confesses to John about her feelings for him.

Why You Should Watch:

Oh Lucy! is not your regular romantic story. The out-of-the-box treatment and the unexpectedly touching ending is something you should definitely watch the movie for. The story of an emotionally unfulfilled middle-aged woman emerging from her shell will keep you hooked.

What You Should Watch Next:

If you missed Oh Lucy! watch out for April’s Daughter– a drama about a teen mother-to-be or Manifesto where Cate Blanchett portrays 13 different characters.

7 Lesser Known Gems of A. R. Rahman

Allah-Rakha Rahman or as we popularly know him, A. R. Rahman, the name itself resonates with a powerhouse of talent. He has given the film industry such magnificent masterpieces and that is precisely what makes him a true legend. With a remarkable contribution in both the South film industry as well as Bollywood, A. R. Rahman has now become a household name worldwide. The 2009 Oscar winner has made the country proud numerous times before and is ready to enthral you this time in your city. Catch the maestro perform live on stage and witness a performance like never before. As we prepare ourselves for the live concert, we thought of compiling a list of seven of his songs which were great but did not gain popularity.

Ek Tu Hi Bharosa – Pukar (2000)

While Prabhudeva and Madhuri Dixit’s Kay Sera Sera stole the limelight when it came to songs of the movie. This track sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Rahman got lost somewhere.

Mera Yaar Mila De Saaiyaan – Saathiya (2002)

With great performances and a gripping storyline, Saathiya still remains a favorite of many. With songs sung by Sonu Nigam, the album was a hit. However, this one sung by A. R. Rahman himself is a pure gem.

Dol Dol – Yuva (2003)

A collaboration of Blaaze and Rahman, this one beautifully captures the spirit of Kolkata however, went unnoticed because of the movie’s different take on gangsters.

Dekho Na – Swades (2005)

One of SRK’s best movies, the title track of the album was a huge success. This one here however, is yet another of Rahman’s brilliant compositions.

Ay Hairathe – Guru (2007)

Loosely inspired on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani, Guru’s songs had a touch of Gujarat attached to them. And this one here is a slow and soothing number you can listen to at any point of time.

Jaane Tu Ya Na Jaane Na – Jaane Tu Ya Na Jaane Na (2008)

A young rom-com, Rahman has done a terrific job with some fresh and light songs. This song however, did not gain popularity. Its jazz treatment lends this song a sweet melody.

Rehna Tu – Delhi – 6 (2009)

This one cannot be explained. You have to give it all ears to know why we love this song so much. Go for it.

You can now watch the legend perform live on stage, as he is set to tour various cities in India in the massive national tour, ENCORE with MTV. Book your tickets here!

Half Baked by Aakash Mehta: Filled With Hysterically Relatable Jokes

Mumbai rains have lost their plot, undoubtedly. Mumbai’s weather is almost like a woman’s mood and this coming from a woman, says a lot. So on a rainy Sunday evening in October with nothing but the Monday blues drawing in, I thought of making myself feel a little lighter and have some fun. And what better than some stand-up comedy. Put together by the folks at Brown Bread Collective, Half Baked by Aakash Mehta was the perfect way to spend a Sunday evening. It’s a stand-up trial show by the now famous YouTube comedian. A laughter riot of one hour and few minutes, the performance was fabulously and single-handedly carried on by Aakash (check out one of his best performances below).
The show started with Reuben from Brown Bread Collective (the organizers) warming up the audience with some of his life stories which were hilarious to say the least. Soon enough the main act of the evening kicked off with Aakash being welcomed on the stage with a huge round of applause.

Half Baked Review - BookMyShow

The twist in the show was brought about by Aakash taking us through his life through a story and some music. With extremely relatable & humorous comedy and as the name suggests some kickass pot jokes, he successfully kept us hooked on till the end of the show. Although, they said it was a trial show, the jokes were witty and extremely entertaining. It’s his seventh year in the comedy scene and the guy definitely has the talent to make you fall off your seats laughing aloud.

So we are saying, if you haven’t checked him out yet, you can always do so on his YouTube channel and do watch this space for his upcoming acts to catch him perform live. You can also catch his next performance here and his performance on 24th March here.

Beauty and the Dogs Review: Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2017

Mariam (Mariam Al Ferjani) is just like every other 21-year-old girl who likes to party with her friends and have some good time. However, in a series of unfortunate events, she gets raped by two policemen and what follows is a gruesome and torturous ordeal of begging for help from the authorities whom you trust the most in such situations.

Background and Story:

Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, Beauty and the Dogs is a harrowing and emotional true story which leaves you with goosebumps. Screened in Un Certain Regard at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, the movie begins with Mariam looking pretty in a dress at a private party held by her university in Tunisia. She soon meets a handsome looking lad, Youssef (Ghanem Zrelli), and sneaks out with him to the beach.

In the next sequence, they show a scared Mariam running on the street with her face in a mess and trembling at the sight of every car passing by. Youssef takes her to a private clinic where it is revealed that she has been raped. However, the hospital authorities refuse to admit or even investigate her without any legal ID proof.

Beauty and the Dogs: Review - Jio MAMI 2017- BookMyShow

What follows is a bunch of sequences where the two are shown going to the public hospital, two police stations, where they find no one to hear them out. The police authorities push them in every way to waive the statement, but a stubborn and strong Mariam refuses to give in this easily and stands by the truth even in that state of terror.

Why You Should Watch:

Right from the story to the performances and execution – everything in the film is perfectly done to make you feel like a part of the movie. You are left thinking about the suffering every rape survivor has to go through and it leaves you with a feeling of helplessness. If you are one of those who loves watching real cinema and appreciate being shown the truth, you are bound to like this movie. The dark reality will leave you questioning the current state of affairs in your own society.

What You Should Watch Next:

If you missed Beauty and the Dogs, there’s a whole lot of films at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2017 that you could catch. If you’re looking at some serious fiction cinema then head for I Am Not A Witch (Rungano Nyoni) or Zaineb Hates The Snow. The latter is also made by the director of Beauty and the Dogs.

Golmaal Again Songs Are The Perfect Way To Bring In Diwali This Year

Verdict: Fresh yet classic Golmaal.

The gang is back again with fourth instalment of the popular series and are all set to entertain you with fresh and unseen comedy. Written and by Rohit Shetty, Golmaal Again will see all the boys crack you up yet again. This time around, Kareena Kapoor is replaced by Parineeti Chopra. Going by the trailer, we are sure it will make for the perfect entertainment package for the Diwali weekend and can’t seem to wait to watch the chemistry between the boys yet again. While the album only consists of four songs, all four seem to have become a favorite already. Read on to find out our take on every song of the movie.

Golmaal Again – Title Track:A remake of the popular Golmaal track, this one has an extremely desi twist to it. It makes you want to get on the dance floor and show your moves almost everytime you listen to it. And we bet you can’t stop yourself from listening to it only once.

Maine Tujhko Dekha:A remake of another famous track, Neend Churayi Meri (Ishq -1997), this one is our personal favorite. Even though it’s a remake, it has a touch of freshness to it. This one is in the voice of Neeraj Sridhar and Sukriti Kakkar and is the perfect song this season to woo your girl.

Itna Sannata Kyun Hai: Sung by Aditi Singh Sharma and Amit Mishra, this one is a mix of slow and fast and makes a perfect song when you’re hanging out with friends. Aditi Singh Sharma has done a commendable job by giving it a fun twist with her young and vivacious voice.

Hum Nahi Sudhrenge: A gen-next song that teaches you to celebrate life and easily elevates your mood. The three minute song is sung by Armaan Malik, who is the perfect choice for such a fresh number.
