Verdict: An unconventional romantic drama.
Imagine being given the chance to peek into the future. One would probably try to change things. Maybe, even make some decisions differently. Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho revolves around this idea. Essentially a romance, the film is a reflection of relationships in this day and age.
The central characters, Diya Kapoor (Katrina Kaif) and Jai Varma (Sidharth Malhotra) are childhood sweethearts who in the course of time look like an 'old married couple'. The two are nothing like each other. On one hand, Diya is an artist, who despite being rooted in family values, doesn't hesitate to make the 'first move'. Jai is a brilliant mathematician, who accepts things only if they can be explained in numbers. Love is important to him, but not as important as his career.
Unfortunately, Jai only understands his priorities when wedding bells are about to ring. It is here that a time travel of sorts occurs. He goes back and forth in time from 2016 to 2034 and back, in the process of which crucial events in his life are highlighted. This series of flash-backs and flash-forwards only teach him to love like there is no tomorrow.
Tracing the lives of Jai and Diya, the film opens on a light note with the soothing 'Kho Gaye Hum Kahan'. One is easily pulled into their real world. A world of real families, real hopes and real dreams. However, as the film progresses into multiple twists, in the first half, one is left confused and intrigued, simultaneously. The second half, while having twists that are repetitive, progresses much faster than the first.
While the script may be uninspired, this is not to say that Baar Baar Dekho has nothing to celebrate. The film is equipped with futuristic qualities (without being bizarre), picturesque locations and great music. Plus, it manages to convey what it set out to put across, that one should focus on the smaller details in life.
