Bad Teacher

An Average "Lecture"

[Rating: 2.5]

Director: Jake Kasdan

Cast & Crew: Cameron Diaz, Justin, Timberlake, Jason Segel

Plot Summary: A comedy centered around a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher (Cameron Diaz) who, after being dumped by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague (Justin Timberlake) – a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher.

Review: Elizabeth, played by Cameron Diaz, is happily teaching what she thinks is her first and last year at John Adams Middle School. She hasn’t bothered much to know the names of any of her students and she considers it an aspect not to worry about as she has already made preparations to marry a rich guy. Things do not go exactly as planned, however, and an angry mother-in-law-to-be has cancelled the wedding saying that she spends too much.

The world has fallen apart for Elizabeth as she struggles to set everything back to a position where she can survive. She is back to the very school she had hoped not to see again and now has convinced herself that the only way things are going to get any better is by getting herself a boob job. The story, almost fanatically, revolves around the fund-raising techniques that she uses to get the money. Her obsession is intense and makes you break into a smile right then.

Elizabeth is the very embodiment of a Bad Teacher. Scenes that you see her in give you a "bad" feeling. It’s almost like you look at a rerun of Bad Santa and then keep thinking how bad a Santa he really was. Diaz, with her filthy mouth and a clear disdain for the entire human race, makes you feel bad easily. The movie almost exaggerates the fact "oh-look-how-bad-she-is", and this tends to get a bit overdone at all the wrong times. Humour is one thing; vulgarity is a whole different ballgame.

Amy Squiller, played by Lucy Punch, is Elizabeth’s nemesis. Amy has a crush on Mr. Delacorte, played by Justin Timberlake (in a thankfully short role), and has a killer grip on the top teacher spot. However, Elizabeth seems to have an uncanny ability to convince everyone that she’s doing what she feels is right and that is what should count irrespective of the fact that she would show her students a movie during class so that she could get over her hangover.

Cameron Diaz has played a pretty daring role to throw away all her finesse and innocent looks to play the role of a sexy vixen with her usual glamour but with no decency in her words. She does a pretty good job of it and though it isn’t even somewhere near one of her good roles, it’s enough to give you a comedy that will keep you laughing for all the retardedness it contains.
