One of the first things that strike you about Baji is its visual appeal. The film is set across the scenic coastal stretch of Maharashtra and tells the story of a legendary village vigilante. Shreyas Talpade has set a new benchmark for Marathi cinema with Baji. The story starts with Chidu (Shreyas Talpade) trying to woo Gauri (Amruta Khanvilkar) with the help of his young friend, Golu . She is however, in love with Baji, the superhero who had saved her life when she was a child.
The legend of Baji starts when the neighboring kingdom is plundered and looted by an ambitious King. This stolen wealth is then buried and a village is set up as a guise to keep off thieves from trying to dig up the treasure. Baji is appointed as the vigilante who looks after the safety of the villagers and the wealth. Baji is succeeded by his son generation after generation until one day, he disappears and people start to regard him as nothing more than a mythical story.
When Martand, (Jitendra Joshi) finds a buried treasure chest full of gold coins, he embarks on a mission to find all the treasure and fulfill his late father’s dream of amassing all the wealth for himself. His greed makes him disregard everything else that stands in the way of the treasure. Martand’s first victim turns out to be his best friend Mahesh, who is a police inspector. Unfortunately, Chidu witnesses the murder and is swiftly taken care of too. As the story unfolds, it takes you through the redemption of the legend of Baji.
The film is a visual treat, and is a whole new chapter in the Marathi industry. Shreyas Talpade has outdone himself and we could not have asked for a better comeback. Amruta Khanvilkar is graceful. Shruti Marathe’s item number is forced. The background score is appealing and the songs are catchy. Jitendra Joshi paints a badass villain second time in a row after Duniyadaari. The film is a little too long but the story is spread evenly and does not bore you. The twist in the tale is not something you’d expect and Baji is a surefire win!
Why you should watch the film?
Shreyas Talpade plays a believable superhero and the story is interesting to watch as it unfolds. It is one of the most awaited films of the year and certainly lives up to the expectation.
