This year, Dangal is the only film releasing for Christmas but things weren’t the same in 2015. Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani hit theatres on December 18th, 2015 and the makers of both mega-budget movies went all-out to promote their movies. It was also not the first time that Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films clashed at the box-office. In 2007, Om Shanti Om and Saawariya released on the same day, and while the Farah Khan film was a blockbuster, Ranbir and Sonam’s big-screen debut, failed miserably. That wasn’t the case last year, as Bajirao Mastani beat Dilwale at the domestic box office. Read on to know what happened when the two movies came out hand-in-hand.
Dilwale gets a bigger opening
Since Dilwale had Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as the lead pair, people were really excited about the film. It got a bumper opening and earned more than Bajirao Mastani during the first weekend.
The critics shower praise on Bajirao Mastani
Almost every critic gave a positive review to Bajirao Mastani and called it a masterpiece. They weren't so kind to Rohit Shetty’s movie, which they termed as nonsensical.
Varun Dhawan regrets doing the film
He may have compared it to Inception, but soon after the release, Dhawan stated that he shouldn't have said yes to Dilwale. Varun played SRK’s brother and was cast opposite Kriti Sanon.
SRK-Rohit Shetty fallout
After the success of Chennai Express, Rohit Shetty soon became one of Shah Rukh Khan's favorite directors. But it’s now being reported that the two had major differences with regard to the release date of Dilwale. Shetty didn't want it to clash with Bajirao Mastani but SRK felt otherwise.
