Beastly – Watch it if you love romantic fantasy movies devoid of logic
There would be very few teenagers who haven’t read or heard of the Beauty and the Beast.
An all time classic, Beauty and the Beast has been adapted in various formats. The premise of the novel holds true in the current scenario as not many would fall in love without giving importance to facial appearances.
Beastly is a modern-day version of Beauty and the Beast, set in New York. Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) is a smart handsome son of an elite news anchor. He is transformed (Read: Due to a Curse) into a hideous-looking bald man by his classmate, whom he bullies for her ugly looks. The curse can only be broken when Kyle finds true love.
As a result he has to stay confined to his apartment with his maid and a blind teacher, Will Fratalli (Neil Patrick Harris). Kyle’s father ignores him completely. Finally out of desperation, he ventures out of the house. He meets Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens) who is the same gal who studies in his college and has a secret crush on him. Kyle decides to follow her one night.
He finds himself in middle of a shoot-out during which Lindy’s dad shoots a mugger. Kyle saves Lindy and agrees to protect her and keep her safe in his house. Slowly but steadily, he starts getting infatuated with Lindy.
Does Kyle manage to express his feelings towards Lindy or does Lindy resent him due to his ugly looks? Moreover, does Kyle ever regain his original appearance?
The first thing that comes to your mind while watching this movie is – Am I watching a Bollywood flick? Bollywood seems to have finally inspired Hollywood as the movie is filled with mushy songs and dialogues. Some parts of the movie also remind you of the famous Twilight series.
Alex Pettyfer enacts his part well and manages to connect with the audience. However, his post-transformation scenes could have been better. Vanessa Hudgens is cute. The audience will surely enjoy the performance of Neil Patrick Harris who sticks to his by now famous ‘Barney Stinson’ mannerisms. His popular catch-phrases and inimitable style will certainly entertain you. The movie does boast of a fairly good soundtrack.
Final verdict: Beastly is an average movie with average performances and it is about time that directors stopped messing with the legendary Beauty and the Beast.
