Beauty pageants are one of the most sought after events of the year. Be it an international competition or a national one, they are a huge affair bringing some of the most beautiful women from various parts of the country and globe under one roof. A lot of effort is put to make this a starry night not just by the organizers but also by the contestants, who have put in years of dedication, preparation, and sacrifices. They all want that sparkly student tiara, however, there can be only one winner.

With so much hype around the event and pressure on the contestants, things do not always go according to the plans. Today, on International Tiara Day, let’s take a look at some of the blunders that took place around beauty pageants.

Miss Universe 2015
Last year the internet went into a frenzy after Steve Harvey accidentally announced the wrong contestant as Miss Universe 2015. As it boiled down to Miss Philippines and Miss Columbia, tensions were soaring before Harvey announced Miss Columbia as Miss Universe 2015. And as she stood waving to the crowd with her crown and sash, it was brought to everyone’s attention by a red-faced Harvey that Miss Philippines was indeed the winner.

Miss USA, 2009
At the Miss USA pageant IN 2009, runner-up Miss California was asked if every state should follow Vermont, which was the fourth state at the time to legalize same-sex marriage. The question was asked by famous blogger and columnist, Perez Hilton, who is also openly gay. Miss California’s answer sparked a huge controversy and received much backlash. Here is what she answered, "We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be – between a man and a woman."

Miss Universe 2006
Even before Steve Harvey made his huge blunder which resulted in him being the butt of jokes and memes on the internet, a similar unfortunate event transpired at the Miss Universe 2006. The pageant that took place in Russia was hosted by famous actor and host, Alan Thicke. Again, as pressure was high with the competition down to the last two contestants, Miss Costa Rica and Miss Russia, Thicke announced the winner in a rather cryptic manner which was interpreted wrongly. He said, “The first runner-up is… Miss Costa Rica–Miss World 2006, Miss Russia!” The crowd started cheering and Miss Costa Rica was crowned before the confusion could be cleared up. The celebration was, however, short-lived.

Miss World, 2000
We all know and are very proud of the fact that Priyanka Chopra won the Miss World crown in 2000. Although, her answer in the QnA round might have you shaking your head in dismay. When asked who was the person living today she admired the most, Chopra answered saying Mother Theresa. While we give her a huge thumbs up for her choice, sadly, Mother Teresa had passed away in 1997.

Miss USA, 2007
During the Miss USA 2007 competition, Miss Teen South Carolina was asked what she thinks are the reasons that one-fifth of the Americans cannot locate their country on a map. She responded saying, "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uhh, or, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for us." Let’s just say everyone was as confused as she was after listening to her response.

Well, with so much pressure on the contestants to get it right and win, blunders are inevitable. But these women should be appreciated for all their hard work and dedication, that’s for sure.
