Bee Gees – The Legacy Stays Alive

The Bee Gees, formed in 1958, released their first-ever single on this day, April 14, in 1967 – titled New York Mining Disaster 1941. The pop music trio comprises the Gibbs brothers – twins Robin and Maurice along with their elder brother Barry. The legendary group’s first performance was actually a lip-syncing gig, before a broken record forced them to sing live!

While they had albums even before they released this single, their biggest chart toppers came in the 70s, starting from How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Jive Talkin’, You Should Be Dancing, Stayin’ Alive, Tragedy, Too Much Heaven and ending at Love You Inside Out. This Grammy-winning band, originally from England before moving to Australia, became the continent’s answer to The Beatles with a slew of romantic hits, before they turned to R&B in the mid-70s, making them the biggest pop group of the era and also the signature sound of America’s disco phenomenon.

When the brothers were children, they started songwriting through radio games. While listening to the radio, they would pretend to be in charge of writing the artist’s next hit record. Robin explained that it was a hobby that they weren’t even aware of. Also, as a teenager, Robin was almost killed in a train crash, while Barry was nearly fatally burned when he was an infant.

The band believed that melody was the most important thing about writing a song. They would approach the lyrics only after, working them into the melody. Listeners were able to relate to their songs with the lyrics being gender-neutral, since "love is universal and has no gender". This is why they’d use you or babe instead of he or she. They popularized the falsetto style of singing.

Their musical influences were The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and Stevie Wonder among others. Those weren’t the only influences – it was John Lennon of The Beatles who gave Maurice his first-ever drink – sadly enough Maurice eventually turned into an alcoholic, leading to a failed marriage. It was also at Eric Clapton‘s suggestion that the brothers relocated to Miami, Florida, for a while early in 1975 to record albums.

All three of them would equally contribute to the vocals, guitar and keyboards. They wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists such as Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Celine Dion, Destiny’s Child and many others. Not just that, there have been over 500 successful covers of the trio’s songs by Elvis Presley, Diana Ross, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys and numerous others.

Here are some records you must know about their…records:

They have sold more than 220 million records worldwide. Their record Saturday Night Fever ended up becoming the best-selling soundtrack of all time worldwide.

They are the first and only songwriters to have five songs in the ‘Top 10‘ at the same time. The Bee Gees is also the only music group in history to achieve the No. 1 on the UK charts in four decades – 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.

They have sold out stadium concerts all around the world, from Dublin to Sydney! Apart from holding the most successful pop concert in Australia’s history, they also set a New Zealand sales record for most tickets ever sold in a single day: 35,606.

While only Barry is alive after Maurice passed away in 2003 and Robin in 2012, the trio’s legacy shall ah, ah, ah, ah, stay alive!
