Begum Jaan Trailer: Vidya Balan Steals the Limelight!

Vidya Balan is one actress who owns the screen. Every time she comes on screen, its her character which we see, not a star. Vidya, who was last seen in Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani 2 is all set to return on the big screen this Summer. After playing a wronged actress in The Dirty Picture, a pregnant woman looking for her missing husband in Kahaani, and a mother to a child suffering from progeria in Paa, the actress has once again found another powerful character in Srijit Mukherjee's Begum Jaan. Just a few weeks ago, when the first look of the film was released, Vidya stunned us with her avatar in the film. Playing a fiery and fearless hookah-smoking madam of a brothel, Vidya sports a statement unibrow in this hard-hitting period drama set during the time of partition.

The trailer of the movie Begum Jaan was launched yesterday and Vidya Balan steals the show. She looks completely in character as she mouths one powerful dialogue after another in the 2 minute 56 second trailer. Another thing that impresses us is the ensemble cast that includes Naseeruddin ShahRajit Kapur Ashish VidyarthiVivek MushranChunky Pandey, Ila Arun, Gauhar Khan and Pallavi Sharda. While all the actors look impressive in their roles, it is Chunky Pandey who stands out. The actor is almost unrecognisable.

The trailer starts with a voice over by Amitabh Bachchan explaining the premise of the film. Begum Jaan is set during the partition era of India and Pakistan in 1947. Borders have to be drawn between the two countries and the bone of contention is a brothel which falls right at the border in such a way that half of it falls in India and half in Pakistan. The owner of this brothel, Begun Jaan refuses to vacate her haveli and this leads to a tragic and violent fight between the administrators and the prostitutes of this brothel, for whom this haveli is their home.

Begum Jaan is the Hindi adaptation of Srijit Mukherjee's Bengali blockbuster Rajkahani starring Rituparana Sen Gupta in the lead role. While Rajkahani was set in West Bengal, in Begum Jaan the story shifts to Punjab. Though all the characters are Punjabi, the sentiments and the milieu remain the same. The film is set to hit the theatres on April 14th.
