The Best Cops in Kollywood

Kollywood cinema has had a few iconic police roles in the past. Some of them have starred two of Tamil cinema’s greatest actors – MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. In MGR’s debut film, Sathi Leelavathi, he played the role of a policeman. Sivaji Ganesan set a mark with his film Thanga Pathakkam. Cop films are still one of the most liked genres in Tamil cinema. From Rajinikanth to Kamal Haasan, Vikram to Suriya– some of tinsel town’s most popular actors have played police officers in their films. They have charmed us with their good looks and their unique traits. We tell you about some of Tamil cinema’s best cops and their unique abilities.

1. Raghavan played by Kamal Haasan

Movie: Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu

Powerful punch: Gate a moodra!

Special Ability

He meets his enemy and challenges him to have a one-on-one face off. He also comes across as the only police officer who swears the most and the one who comes up with the wittiest comebacks. Directed by Gautham Menon, this film saw Kamal Haasan play the role of an officer, who solves a series of crimes in India and abroad. Not to forget how dashing he looked in those RayBan glasses!

2. Anbuselvan IPS played by Suriya

Movie: Kaakha Kaakha

Powerful punch: Nan thaniyave irundhu pazhagiten…adhu yenaku pudichirku

Special Ability

Anbuselvan is a soft-spoken yet competent, young police officer whose sole aim is to work on one mission and never allow anything to distract his work process. Not to forget that these very qualities are what Maya (Jyothika) admires in him. Gautham Menon is the master of making powerful cop dramas, and balancing them with an equal number of emotional sequences, and this film is an example of this.

3. Sathyadev played by Ajith

Powerful Punch: Inoru nimisham nee inga irunde…un thalai irukadhu. Now get out!

Movie: Yennai Arindhaal

Special Ability

Sathyadev didn’t commit himself to wear the khaki 24/7 because he was a rebel, but his ways of tackling crime were different. Clad in a denim shirt and the trademark ‘kada’, this officer disguised himself as regular person, and learnt the  secrets of a criminal gang. Yennai Arindhaal is the third movie directed by Gautham Menon a.k.a the ‘cop’ expert, which fell in the police franchise.

4. Duraisingam played by Suriya

Movie: Singam (Singam, Singam 2 and S3)

Powerful punch: Ongiadicha ondratanu weight da!

Special Ability

Suriya - Bookmyshow

Unlike his soft-spoken character in Kaaka Kaaka, Suriya’s portrayal as Duraisingam was aggressive and loud. And there are no complaints, as this is certainly required in a masala film. Apart from looking dapper in his khaki uniform, the actor sported a horseshoe mustache. The look instantly became a rage and added a distinct element to the role. This film was directed by Hari

5. Aarusaamy played by Vikram

Movie: Saamy

Powerful punch: Naan police ille…poriki!

Special Ability

Vik min - Bookmyshow

This no-nonsense cop will do anything to get to the bottom of a political scam. He can adapt himself as a goon, relish a quick mix of idli and beer for breakfast and pretend to take money from a top politician. And that’s why Aarusaamy is a thug! His methods are unconventional and superb to watch. Hari is another expert at making cop films.

6. Sethupathi

Powerful punch: Police dhan hero. Police dhan gethu!

Movie: Sethupathi

Special Ability

This casual and laidback officer doesn’t believe in delivering punchlines or engaging in heavy action stunts; he’s a man who aims to approach everything with ease and have it under control. The film was directed by Arun Kumar.
