When most people think ‘Bollywood’, visions of grand sets, item numbers, star kids, and masala entertainers pop into their minds. But Bollywood so much more than that. Sure, this will always remain an essential part of Bollywood. Even as Kangana Ranaut snubs it, Bollywood cannot do without nepotism, just like Sanjay Leela Bhansali cannot do without grandeur and Rishi Kapoor without senseless tweeting. But Bollywood has come a long way in the past 10 years and given us movies that we can only be proud of.
As BookMyShow turns 10 this year, we are going back to the 10 best movies of the past decade and telling you why we loved them. Let us know if you agree with us in comments below, and tell us why you don’t. Take a look at our top 10 list here:
No movie has wowed us this year as much as this thriller that released in March. It finally put a talent like Rajkumar Rao on everyone’s radar, and his success streak has been going upward ever since. He brought life into a very simple plot, which would have fallen apart with a bad actor. Trapped kept us at the edge of our seats, and even Mom comes second to get our hearts racing that fast.
One of the underdogs last year, Pink managed to win hearts with a limited budget and several unknown faces. While many may credit the success of the movie to the popularity of Amitabh Bachchan, it was the plot of the movie that grabbed eyeballs, as well as the performances of Taapsee Pannu and Kirti Kulhari that were most appreciated.
One of Deepika Padukone’s best performances till date, this movie saw the coming together of three talents – the aforementioned actress, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan. While Irrfan has a knack of grabbing the viewer’s attention, it was Big B that delivered the best of the trio. With a simple, yet realistic storyline, this film won our hearts in 2015.
If you need another reason to love Kangana Ranaut, it is this movie. The actress has come a long way in her career, and her performance in this comedy drama proves what a delight she is to watch on screen. Even Rajkumar Rao couldn’t steal this movie from her. This is the kind of simplistic feminist movie every woman in this country wants to watch.
This movie almost made it to the Oscars. Almost! But even if it was snubbed by the Academy, it certainly won hearts of movie goers and critics all over the world. A romance story between two highly unlikely individuals, even non-romantics would enjoy this sweet love story. Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur breathe fresh air into the simple yet deeply moving plot.
One of the best thrillers of the last decade, this movie has ruined friendships as the spoiler was revealed by one to another. Vidya Balan delivers a stunning performance, and the plot twists in the film are the best Bollywood has given us. Unfortunately, Kahaani 2 wasn’t as powerful as its prequel but Vidya is amazing in it nevertheless.
Another Vidya-starrer, this movie raised as many eyebrows as much it captured hearts. Vidya was highly praised for her bold portrayal of the real-life character Silk Smitha, and none of her other performances match up to this one. Ekta Kapoor has definitely impressed us for the first time with this one, after being heavily criticized in the past for her saas-bahu sagas.
For three years, Vidya Balan ruled our hearts, even when she was paired with the unlikeliest of co-stars. 2010’s Ishqiya was another one of her bold roles, starring alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. Even with some of the biggest talents in the industry, Vidya managed to keep all the attention to herself in this one. The sequel, Dedh Ishqiya, could not match up to this one.
Everyone’s favorite movie of the year, this movie saw the coming together of Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, after Rang De Basanti. But it was Boman Irani who delivered one of his best performances, overshadowing even Aamir. Another striking actor in this film was newcomer Omi Vaidya, who played the foreign-returned student Chatur aka Silencer. Remember the famous speech?
Priyanka Chopra gave one of the best performances of her career in this movie. After a streak of flopped films, she finally found success with Fashion, where she played a model, struggling with fame. The movie also starred Kangana Ranaut as PeeCee’s peer, who also gave a fascinating performance. A pure Madhur Bhandarkar film, this one still manages to give us goosebumps.
