Birdman is giddy, glorious, exhilarating entertainment. It’s a hugely pleasurable roller coaster ride. But it’s also so layered that you need to see it again to make sense of it. For one, it begins with a man wearing only underwear, levitating. In the first scene, actor Riggan Thomson played by Michael Keaton, is hovering mid-air. Riggan was once a star – his biggest success was playing the superhero Birdman – but he is now imprisoned in that awful no man’s land of a has-been. He was once famous. Now he is irrelevant and tragically obscure. Riggan is attempting to get traction and credibility via theater – by directing and starring in a Broadway play. But he is racked by insecurity, vanity and depression.
