Blended: Film Review – A semi-sweet family drama set on a holiday in picturesque locales

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore return to create magic yet again with their already proven sizzling chemistry in films like The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates. The previous films were a treat to watch because of their unique concept that made for a pleasurable watch nonetheless. Frank Coraci directs the two powerhouse performers in a film that is schmaltzy along with all things nice, but somewhere fails to drive home the point of a family drama.

Jim (Sandler) and Lauren (Barrymore) are single parents raising kids on the wrong side of their teenage and hence, are often seen tearing their hair out. While the film has its share of fun moments, there are a few that go OTT at the same time. Single parents who are looking to mingle meet each other on a blind date and soon after decide not to meet each other again. As luck and a cliche would have it, they do meet, and keep meeting till they… wait for it… fall in love with each other! Why this formula doesn’t work is pretty obvious. Why it could work is where the fault lies. Unlike the protagonists’ chemistry in their previous films, there is something grossly amiss here. It could also be an understanding wherein they seem to be communicating how they were better off doing a quiet romantic film,  than a noisy family holiday film.
To award some brownie points to the crew working on the film, most of the aspects of an African holiday have been taken into account and it makes the film a treat to watch. For those who have perhaps been struck by wanderlust will find the feeling of unrest growing a lot more after they watch this film. For everyone else, it is a fun film to watch, but doesn’t have a lesson attached to it.
Why should you watch this film?
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore together… obviously. And the beautifully captured African landscape, if you need more reason.
