There is no doubt that Bollywood actors have given us some brilliant performances over these several decades. Most cinema lovers in India relate to an actor in a certain role. For example, Sunny Deol is one actor who we have often seen play the character of a patriotic person who loves his country and wants to change things for its good. It would really be surprising if he broke away from the typical to play a character we do not know him to do in a movie. There have been many times though actors take up a role that is completely different to the image their fans have of them. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Consider Mukesh Rishi in Sarfarosh (1999), for instance. Till then, we knew him to play negative roles and there he was, playing an honest cop. It was a welcome surprise and he was appreciated by one and all.
Let's take a look at few other such actors who have taken their audience by surprise with certain performances of theirs.
Kareena Kapoor Khan – Chameli (2003)
Playing a prostitute in this film, Kareena definitely got into the skin of her character and did a splendid job. This is counted as one of her best performances and with this role, she won the hearts of many.
Amitabh Bachchan – Paa (2009)
The angry young man of Bollywood, Amitabh was seen playing a 13-year-old boy Auro who is suffering from progeria. Many failed to actually believe that it was Amitabh Bachchan but then again only Big B can do justice to such a character. From the make-up to the presentation of his character, everything was perfect and this performance of the actor is still talked about highly.
Shah Rukh Khan – Chak De India! (2007)
The king of romance, the Baadshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan earned himself the fame romancing his leading ladies on screen. In Shimit Amin's film Chak De India!, SRK was seen playing the role of a coach of the Women's Indian Hockey team. Being a mentor to his team and leading them to victory, Shah Rukh's character did stir up a lot of emotions in his several fans' hearts.
Sanjay Dutt – Munnabhai series
We have seen Sanjay Dutt playing characters with grey shades in most of his movies. This time around though, he tried something out of the box and we saw him as a lovable character who while playing a local goon has a good heart in Munnabhai. It was a big surprise to see Sanjay Dutt play such a character and this surprise was definitely a fun one.
Rani Mukherji – Black (2005)
By far, this is regarded as the actress' best performance. She completely owned this character of a blind and deaf girl. No one in their wildest dreams could have thought that Rani would be seen playing such a character. She was always known to play bubbly characters in most of her movies. Black changed it and Rani Mukherji was praised by one and all.
