Apart from starring in movies, Bollywood actors take up brand endorsements and appear in commercials to rake in the moolah. And by endorsing brands, they are perceived as representatives for the brands- users of the specific product that ordinary people can look up to. In fact, getting a celebrity to endorse your brand is the easiest way to get the public’s attention because of the brand recall value they bring in. The celebrity wins as he gets a lot of publicity from these associations. From hoardings to TV commercials, celebrities are seen in different campaigns. However, many stars have received negative publicity from the brands they’ve endorsed. Want to know more? Then you’re at the right place.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Aishwarya Rai’s print advertisement for a popular jewelry brand created a lot a furor. The advertisement featured a dark-skinned child, holding an umbrella over her head. The image was said to be a recreation of a portrait from the colonial era. But activists called the image racist, and accused the brand of encouraging child labor. Aishwarya gave a press statement which stated that using this image was a creative call taken by the brand.
The Big B of Bollywood wasn’t spared either. In 2013, Amitabh Bachchan’s commercial for a candy brand landed him in trouble as he was shown pelting stones at a mango tree. This irked the Advertising Standards Council of India. They released a statement saying children would imitate Amitabh Bachchan’s action from the commercial, which could cause injury. The commercial was later pulled off air.
Khiladi Kumar faced criticism in 2009, when he walked the ramp for a popular denim brand. During the show, the actor asked wife Twinkle Khanna to unbutton his pants to mirror the tagline of the brand, and received flak for it. A person from an NGO filed a case of obscenity against the actor and his wife. The actor later declared that it was a spontaneous act, and wasn’t done with any other motive.
Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan wasn’t spared either. The actor found himself at the receiving end for endorsing a skin lightening cream. An online campaign titled ‘Dark and Beautiful‘ urged the star and the brand to stop promoting fairness creams. Later, many celebrities, including Aamir Khan, backed the serious cause and vowed never to promote such products. However, SRK didn’t follow this path.
