Bollywood Films That Rocked The Retro Look

Retro is in vogue all the time as contemporary style trends try to mix and match a lot with the fashion of the past. With Rangoon’s ultra-glamorous retro look still fresh in our minds, we are only being increasingly pulled towards the beauty of it. Bollywood frequently experiments with films that feature retro elements to recreate the magic of the 80s and 90s. The directors also take the liberty to play around certain themes that defined films of those times.

The old school charm that such films carry give us a feeling of living those times when everything was so much different from how the world looks now.

Here are six such films that rocked the retro theme and we enjoyed them immensely.

Om Shanti Om (2007)

The biggest hit of the year, Om Shanti Om had everything that a blockbuster needs; revenge, romance, reincarnation, big hero, big budget, big debut, just a little bit of everything. Shah Rukh Khan as Om and Deepika Padukone as Shanti, in the song Dhoom Taana took us on a magical journey of Bollywood through several decades. The Mumtaz-inspired dresses, eye makeup coupled with the elegant hairdos and colorful jackets with gelled hair; all took us back into history.

Khoya Khoya Chaand (2007)

Sudhir Mishra’s period film Khoya Khoya Chaand left no stone unturned in transporting the audiences into the bright lights of the golden period of the film industry. The chamak dhamak, as they say, is beautifully portrayed through vintage automobiles, colourful and melodramatic film sets. And how can we forget the beautiful music track that imbibed the innocence and purity of the music of that period?

Action Replayy (2010)

Remember Akshay Kumar’s retro wig and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s pretty polka dot wardrobe and hairstyles? Action Replayy was a perfect tribute to the retro age. From physical attire to body language and sets, everything in the film reminded us about those times left behind.

Lootera (2013)

Lootera, a brilliant piece of work, used the retro elements minimally. The clean-shaven look and quiet demeanour of Ranveer Singh might have left us speechless but there is no denying that the film’ subtlety was what we appreciated the most. And not to forget Sonakshi Sinha’s plain but colorful saris perfected with a big dot of bindi on her forehead.

Bombay Velvet (2015)

Recreating Mumbai of the 1960s is no cake walk. Anurag Kashyap deserves an A grade for the look of the film. Ranbir Kapoor in stylish chequered shirts wearing prim sunglasses and Anushka Sharma in her dazzling gowns, pencil dresses with dramatic hairstyles and makeup, all set in the vintage background of a growing city absolutely stole the show.
