July was a month full of surprises. Movies that were having a hard time releasing hit the theatres and movies expected to be average came out great. The releases also belonged to a range of genres. We had hard hitting thrillers like Mom, entertainers like Mubarakan, and realistic dramas like Lipstick Under My Burkha. There were a number of releases and last month was the best of the year in terms of movies so far.
As surprising as it is, almost all the releases in July were liked by the audience and even though the star rating wasn't high, the films didn't fail to entertain. So we sum up the month with a list of movies you can watch and the ones you must watch. Movie lovers, keep your sticky notes, pens, and notebooks ready!
The month started with the mother of all movies – Mom – starring Sridevi. The thriller got rave reviews for being so well made, while Sridevi got immense appreciation from critics and viewers alike. This is one of the best thrillers of Bollywood so far and a must-watch.
Guest Iin London
The alleged sequel to Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge had us in splits again. Paresh Rawal's authentic comedy and Karthik Aryan's comic timing made this movie a laughter ride. If you are in for some farty comedy, this one is a must-watch.
Lipstick Under My Burkha
After struggling for a clean chit all year, Lipstick Under My Burkha finally released and garnered positive reviews from the critics all over the country. The movie revolves around four women and their pursuit of happiness. Indeed a must-watch.
Raag Desh touched a very crucial topic that was lost in the pages of history and freedom struggle – The Red Fort trials of 1945. If you are looking for a patriotic boost, then this is your go-to film in the latest lot.
Based on the period of Emergency, this venture of Madhur Bhandarkar got mixed reviews from the critics. But the way this movie tries to depict the intricacies of the Emergency impressed most. Another movie revolving in the history, Indu Sarkar is also a must-watch.
July ended on a very entertaining note, with Mubarakan starring Anil Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor. The film was referred to as the first family entertainer of the year, and Anil Kapoor was highly appraised for his work in the movie. For Bollywood junkies, this one is definitely a must-watch.
After being pushed indefinitely, Jagga Jasoos released mid-July. Ranbir's work in this musical was highly appreciated and the picturization was phenomenal. However, the delay in release made the movie lose its connect. The movie is still in cinemas, so you can catch it near you.
Another Bollywood masala entertainer of the month, Munna Michael starred Tiger Shroff and Nawazudding Siddiqui. The film was high on entertainment, dance, and action. Everyone loved Tiger Shroff, however, the movie seemed like a repetition of his first two movies to many people.
There were two more releases this month that fall in the misses category as per the user rating – Shab and Baaraat Company. The Bollywood line-up is getting exciting with every passing month and this was it for July. We will be back again with a list of hits and misses of August, till then keep checking the BookMyShow blog for movie updates.
