The makers of Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan were criticized for not including the hit song, Jabra Fan, in the film. Their decision to remove the song from the movie is reported to be one of the reasons why Fan didn’t do as well as expected. After all, Bollywood fans love it when a movie has some catchy numbers. However, some directors exclude them in order to not slow down the proceedings, and this helps the narration, especially in thrillers. Besides Fan, here are some the other Bollywood movies that didn’t have any songs in it.
Even though Kahaani had an album that consisted of eight tracks, songs were only played during the opening and end credits. This was a great decision by Sujoy Ghosh as the lack of songs helped the gripping narrative and kept the audience at the edge of their seats.
Everyone was raving about this Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur starrer and the critics regarded it as one of the best films of 2013. However, the audience wasn’t too impressed with the slow pace of the movie and it didn’t fare well at the box-office. The presence of songs would’ve probably increased the mass appeal of The Lunchbox.
With films like Special 26, Baby, and A Wednesday to his credit, Neeraj Pandey is definitely one of the most respected directors in the Hindi film industry. While his latest movies do have songs and a romantic track, his debut film, A Wednesday, lacked both. The fantastic storyline was backed by exceptional performances by Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black won many awards and its lead actors, Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, were praised for their performances. This 2005 film told the story of a blind and deaf girl, and the relationship she shared with her teacher. Black was so good that you’d barely noticed the absence of songs in it.
Based on Rajeev Gandhi’s assassination and the Sri Lankan Civil War, Madras Cafe was Shoojit Sircar’s next film after Vicky Donor. The film was a taut thriller and received positive reviews. Since Madras Cafe released soon after Chennai Express and Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara, it didn’t earn a lot of money at the box office.
