When Bollywood Was Ruled By The Animal World

This week’s release, Zootopia, shows an animal metropolis, where all kinds of species live together. The movie has been well-received by cinema lovers. It is always a treat to watch animals on the big screen, especially those that walk and talk like humans. Bollywood is not short of such films, featuring animals from ferocious beats to cute and cuddly pets, who have played important roles in their movies. In fact, in certain movies, like Life of Pi, animals have stolen the limelight from the lead actors. They become an integral part of the film, attracting a larger crowd to the theaters.

Here’s a list of movies where animals were the real stars:

It is safe to say that the statistics of people bringing home a pomeranian and naming it "Tuffy" was high during the HAHK era. Is this movie anything without the famous Tuffy? Certainly not! The dog who moonlighted as an umpire at friendly cricket matches, was originally casted to play the cupid for Madhuri‘s and Salman‘s characters, and was paid in belly rubs.

This drama starring Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh was narrated by the pet dog of the family, Pluto, voiced by none other than Aamir Khan. The story is thus seen from his perspective, making him the most important character of the film. In this movie about people with first-world problems, Pluto was the only character you could relate to.

Not all pigeons are dumb. Some clinch pivotal roles under the prestigious Rajshri banner. The Kabootar (played by the pigeon) would deliver letters between the two lovers, and was so important that the movie had to dedicate an entire song to the bird.

The elephant Ramu was the hero of this film, even sacrificing his life to mend ties between his beloved human and his (actor’s not elephant’s) wife. The antics of Ramu are also fun to watch. Mind you, this was a few decades and a  PETA ago.

How many Golden Retrievers can boast of a movie being named after them? The wonder dog was the owner of property coveted by the lead actor Akshay Kumar, but there was no doubt who the real star of the movie was. Some may say that film did well because of three things: Entertainment. Entertainment. Entertainment.

Maa

The film killed off the lead actress Jaya Prada‘s character, only to return and seek revenge with the help of a dog, who could see ghosts. Talk about ridiculous twists and turns in Bollywood! That dog though!

"Dhanno ghodi hoke agar tanga kheech sakti hai toh Basanti ladki hoke tanga nahi chala sakti?" – Golden words by Basanti, the taangewaali. Basanti and Dhanno was the original female-bonding film with their dedicated and loving friendship. What is Basanti without Dhanno? The bond between the horse and the lead actress was as strong as the Jai-Veeru friendship in the film.
