Being a Bollywood hunk or beauty is not always an easy task. When it comes to being true to a role, they leave no stone unturned to get into the skin of their respective characters. From drastic physical change to gaining and losing weight at the drop of a hat, being an actor calls for a lot of effort. Sometimes, a particular onscreen avatar may require them to take a bold physical transformation. Shaving off their beautiful tresses could be one of them!
This bold (bald) decision is an occupational hazard for the stars of B-Town. From Antara Mali to Shahid Kapoor, several actors have walked this path for their films. The latest to join the league is Priyanka Chopra, sporting a bald look in her upcoming film, Mary Kom. While some actors manage with prosthetic make-up, many others go bald (or nearly bald) to get the perfect look. Here’s our list of B-Town actors who took this bo(a)ld step, and walked on with flying colors.
1. Priyanka Chopra – Mary Kom
Piggy Chops is the latest female entrant in the Bollywood baldies club. In her upcoming biopic, PeeCee will be seen in a bald avatar for a sequence. However, Priyanka hasn’t shaved off her beautiful hair. Instead, she let the prosthetics and make-up do the trick. During the trailer launch, Priyanka said, "Mary has gone bald in her life. This scene is an important one in the film, hence I wasn’t hesitant. In fact, I was very excited."
2. Emraan Hashmi – Mr. X
The ‘serial kisser’ of Bollywood will soon be seen in a new look. In the upcoming Vikram Bhatt‘s film, Mr. X, Emraan dons a bald avatar. Emraan himself suggested this look for the 3D-Thriller. Though this bald appearance may be in perfect sync with the movie, but a fact worth accepting – it is definitely, spooky.
3. Shahid Kapoor – Haider
Shaving off your bouncy locks may not be an acceptable act for actors of the younger generation. But proving it wrong is the chocolate boy – Shahid Kapoor. He’ll be seen in a closely-cropped haircut in his upcoming film, Haider directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. Even though he won’t be able to work on his next project until his hair grow back, Shahid wasn’t a bit hesitant to don the almost bald look. Guess being Pankaj Kapoor‘s son helped Shahid shed the handsome hero vanity.
4. Aamir Khan – Ghajini
Mr. Perfectionist goes that extra mile to make his onscreen role as authentic as possible. His 2008 blockbuster hit, Ghajini demanded a bald look. Aamir Khan didn’t hesitate and shaved off his head, creating the iconic striped head-shave style. Accompanied with tattoos all over his body, Aamir Khan became the most-memorable baldies in B-Town history. The hairstyle was emulated across the nation for the longest time. Mr. Perfectionist had turned into a trendsetter with Ghajini!
5. Salman Khan – Tere Naam
The Bollywood’s dabanggdaar hunk never acts. His sheer presence infront of the camera is enough to make the audience go gaga. He believes in entertaining the audience sans any physical transformation. But there is an exception. In the 2003 hit, Tere Naam, the superstar went from sporting long locks in the first-half to a nearly bald look, post interval. The tonsured avatar of Salman Khan left the audience empathizing the pain and suffering felt by Radhe Mohan.
6. Sanjay Dutt – Agneepath
Guess no one could have reprised the role of Kancha as Sanjay Dutt did in the remake of Agneepath. The devious Kancha with his menacing smile, beefed up muscles, ear piercing and inked arms couldn’t have got better. But the highlight of the cruel character is without doubt, the shining pate. All this sums up to a nasty, scary-looking villain. And that exactly was the need of the film.
7. Shilpa Shetty – The Desire
Her mere onscreen presence oozes out the oomph factor. The beautiful Bollywood star took a bold step of donning a bald look in the Indo-Chinese movie, The Desire. Instead of shaving off her lustrous tresses, prosthetics make-up helped her get the right look for her Buddhist monk character.
8. Antara Mali – And Once Again
In Amol Palekar‘s And Once Again, Antara Mali goes an extra mile to get the perfect look for the character of a monk. She says no-no to prosthetics and make-up, and yes to scissors. Yeah, you got it right. She literally shaved of her head for the role. But, unfortunately, her dedication remains shelved as the movie lies in the can. Kudos to her dedication!
9. Arjun Rampal – RA.One
A true actor will sacrifice his vanity to nail his role in any given movie. Arjun Rampal proves it to his audience that even for a screen presence of 15 minutes he is game to give up on his locks and don the hairless look. Arjun’s bald look definitely makes him a cool villain in the superhero flick, RA.One.
10. Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas – Water
We have actors who follow the conventional path in acting. And then we have Shabaana Azmi and Nandita Das. Both the veteran actresses shed their long mane for Deepa Mehta‘s Water. But unfortunately, owing to protest the film was called off. Later the movie hit the floors, casting Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas in the lead role. And they too followed the footstep of the former actresses of Water and shaved their heads to play the respective characters. Bollywood beauties exhibiting such commitment is laudable.
