Bollywood’s love affair with fusion saris

Fusion saris are on our radar now. They’re already all over the red carpet. The trend is catching on and you can expect B-town ladies to wear the crap out of it in the coming months. We like the trend, in some measure. It delights us to see a celeb sporting a quirky number to perfection. Sometimes, all the risk-taking pays off well. At other times, a design might be stunning but the celeb and the overall look is not. So while Bollywood continues to bastardize, we mean, reinvent the sari, we round up the good, bad and ugly of this new fad.

That we love Sonam Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez is no secret. Jacqueline wore her Anand Kabra sari to perfection. The jacket-blouse looks great on her. The hair and makeup, not so much. Sonam recently stepped out in a fresh-off-the-runway Tarun Tahiliani dhoti-sari and managed to look like a princess in what would make us look like a Koli fisherwoman.
Now let’s take a look at yummy mummy Malaika Arora Khan in a Shivan & Narresh neon number. Saying that the bust is off would be such an understatement. Now if being tacky was the goal, Malaika sure nailed it. And then, there’s Richa Chadda. She is shoving her breasts, funny updo and poor styling sense in our face, all at once! And we’re just going to act like we didn’t see those golden peacocks climbing up her bust. As for Konkana, that’s just a case of bad styling. So bad that we feel sorry for the silk sari.
Coming to Kalki Koechlin. We all love ourselves a quirky sari and a bright, printed blouse but the drape of her pallu makes it look like she just got down from the local train and had to rush straight to the red carpet. And then, her silk-&-sheer Nikhil Thampi sari had so much going on, we didn’t know what to say. But guess what! We’ve done away with the concept of wearing petticoats under our saris.
Here’s Bebo trying to pull a Sonam Kapoor. Let us tell you that her sari comes with a front slit and again, no petticoat. Also, when you’re Kareena Kapoor Khan, you get to attend luncheons dressed like that and that’s just okay. As for Dia Mirza, although it looks like she was playing dress-up with her mom’s golden dupatta, we are not complaining! The lady is pure loveliness.
Adhuna Akhtar, the rebellious star-wife, can always be counted on to bring some drama to the red carpet. She does not give a tinker’s damn about anything and we love her for that!
Those were some of the recent fusion looks spotted in B-town, but we predict there’s more to come. And if the latest runway collections are anything to go by, the contorted sari is here to stay. Most people are likely to either love or hate this trend. So which side of the fence are you on?
